What does the procedure involve?
Knee replacement consists in replacing the damaged joint surfaces with an implant (endoprosthesis). The operation removes the source of pain resulting from advanced degenerative disease and restores the correct range of motion. For many patients it is the end of years of pain and a return to an independent, active life.
The most common indications for the procedure:
Preparation for the procedure:
Orthopedic consultation and qualification for surgery
Laboratory tests
Knee X-ray in specialist projections, sometimes MRI or CT
Anaesthesiological consultation
Stopping anticoagulant and NSAID medications 7-10 days before the operation
Treating any inflammatory foci (teeth, skin)
No smoking or alcohol for a minimum of 2 weeks before the procedure
Course of the procedure
The procedure takes about 1.5-2 hours and is performed under regional anaesthesia (most often spinal).
The surgeon makes an incision in the front of the knee, removes the damaged joint surfaces and implants an endoprosthesis - partial or total, depending on the advancement of the changes.
Drains and a compression dressing are applied.
The doctor assesses the patient’s condition and decides when they can go home.
Rehabilitation usually begins on the first day after the operation.
Recovery and post-procedure recommendations:
Early mobilisation - walking with crutches or a walker
Physical rehabilitation and gait training - daily from day 1
Limiting excessive loading of the operated limb for 6-8 weeks
Regular orthopedic check-ups - 2, 6 and 12 weeks after the operation
Following the recommendations regarding exercises and joint position
Return to office work: 4-6 weeks, physical work - after 10-12 weeks
Full physical activity (cycling, walking) - after 3 months
Infection of the surgical wound or prosthesis
Deep vein thrombosis - anticoagulant prophylaxis is required
Pulmonary embolism (rare but a serious complication)
Persistent swelling and stiffness of the knee
Damage to nerves or vessels (very rare)
Loosening of the implant - possible after years
Frequently asked questions
What does knee replacement involve?
The operation replaces the damaged joint surfaces of the knee with a metal-polyethylene implant. It removes degenerative pain, corrects the limb axis and restores an efficient, stable gait.
When is a knee endoprosthesis necessary?
In advanced gonarthrosis with pain limiting daily functioning, stiffness and axis deformation (valgus/varus), when conservative treatment stops working.
How long does knee endoprosthesis surgery take?
Usually 1.5-2 hours, most often under spinal anaesthesia. Afterwards the patient remains under the care of the clinic’s medical team.
When will I get out of bed after knee surgery?
Mobilisation and the first steps with a walker usually take place on the first day. Early mobilisation and range-of-motion exercises are the key to a good result.
How long does recovery take after a knee endoprosthesis?
A return to most activities takes 10-12 weeks, and the improvement of strength and range of motion progresses up to a year. Regular rehabilitation determines the final result.
Will I be able to kneel and squat after a knee endoprosthesis?
Deep kneeling and squatting can be limited or uncomfortable - this is normal after joint replacement. Everyday activities, stairs, cycling or swimming are fully achievable.
How long does a knee endoprosthesis last?
Modern implants usually last 15-20 years and longer. Maintaining a correct body weight and avoiding high-impact sports extends the life of the endoprosthesis.
Does joint-replacement surgery hurt?
The procedure is painless thanks to anaesthesia, and modern post-operative analgesia (including nerve blocks) effectively controls pain in the first days. The complaints diminish quickly with each week.
How to prepare for knee surgery?
Orthopedic qualification with X-ray, laboratory tests, anaesthesiological consultation, treatment of infections and - with a BMI over 40 - prior weight reduction. It is also worth strengthening the muscles before the procedure.
Is rehabilitation necessary after an endoprosthesis?
Yes - it is an integral part of the treatment: from the first day range-of-motion exercises, gait training, then strengthening. At Luna Clinic we support the patient with a rehabilitation plan and pre- and post-operative therapy.
What are the possible complications of knee replacement?
Rare: infection, thrombosis, joint stiffness, implant damage or its loosening after years. Anticoagulant prophylaxis and following the recommendations significantly reduce the risk.
How much does knee replacement cost in Wrocław?
Knee replacement starts at PLN 35,000 in our price list.
Is it covered by the NFZ (Polish public health insurance)?
Luna Clinic treats patients privately. Knee replacement is funded by the NFZ in contracted hospitals, after assessment and with a waiting time that depends on the hospital.

Effect: pain relief and improved mobility in the following weeks. Durability: modern endoprostheses usually last 15-20 years.
Safety and possible complications
As with any operation, the following are possible - though rare: haematoma, infection, sensory disturbances in the operated area, scar hypertrophy or the need for another procedure.
