01
About the treatment

Tummy tuck - what does the procedure involve?

Abdominal wall surgery is a surgical procedure aimed at restoring the firmness and aesthetic appearance of the abdomen by removing excess skin and fat tissue and often also suturing the separation of the rectus muscles. At Luna Clinic we most often perform this procedure in patients after pregnancies, major weight reduction or in the case of abdominal-wall laxity.

A key element of a full abdominoplasty is suturing the stretched rectus abdominis muscles (linea alba plasty) - it is this that restores a flat abdominal profile and a narrow waist, and often also reduces lower-back pain resulting from a weakened muscular corset.

02
Indications

Indications for the procedure

Whether the procedure is advisable for you is ultimately decided by the doctor during the consultation.

  • Excess loose skin in the lower and/or upper abdomen
  • Separation of the rectus abdominis muscles (diastasis recti)
  • A lack of results after exercise and weight reduction
  • Deformation of the abdomen after a caesarean section or operations
  • Skin folds causing discomfort and dermatological problems
03

Contraindications

Pregnancy or planning a pregnancy in the near future
Uncontrolled chronic diseases (diabetes, hypertension, thyroid disease, heart disease)
BMI above 30 (weight reduction before the operation is recommended)
Blood clotting disorders
A tendency to hypertrophic scars (requires individual qualification)
Unrealistic expectations regarding the result
04
Preparation

How to prepare for the procedure?

The procedure is always preceded by a qualification consultation with a plastic surgeon - we discuss expectations, examine the area to be operated on and establish an individual treatment plan. As standard, we order a full set of tests (blood count, coagulation, electrolytes, ECG for general anaesthesia) and, if necessary, additional specialist consultations.

  • Consultation with a plastic surgeon for qualification, discussing expectations and the treatment plan
  • Laboratory tests
  • Stopping anticoagulant medications at least 14 days before the operation (after consulting a doctor)
  • Avoiding alcohol and cigarette smoking for at least 14 days before the procedure - for better healing
  • Thorough skin hygiene on the day of the procedure (no make-up, creams or lotions)

The tummy-tuck procedure step by step

1Pre-operative markingthe surgeon marks the incision lines in a standing position so that the scar is hidden under the underwear.
2Anaesthesia generalthe operation takes 2-4 hours depending on the scope.
3Incision and preparation of the abdominal wallthe incision is made low, from hip to hip; the skin with the subcutaneous tissue is lifted up to the costal arches.
4Suturing the rectus musclesthe muscle separation (diastasis) is repaired with strong sutures along its whole length - from the sternum to the pubic symphysis.
5Removal of excess skin and repositioning of the navelthe excess of the abdominal wall is excised, and the navel is brought out into a new, natural position.
6Suturing, drains, compressionthe wound is closed in layers, drains (1-2 days) and a compression garment are applied; the doctor then assesses the patient’s condition and decides when they can go home.

Recovery

Recovery and post-procedure recommendations

  • Swelling and bruising are natural and diminish within 2-4 weeks
  • Sleeping with the head elevated is recommended for the first few days
  • Dressings and sutures cared for according to the doctor’s recommendations
  • Sutures are usually removed after 7-14 days
  • Avoiding intense physical exertion and bending over for a minimum of 4-6 weeks
  • No sunbathing or use of a solarium for a minimum of 6 months - SPF 50 protection is necessary
  • After full healing, scar massages and products supporting their maturation may be introduced - according to the doctor’s recommendation
  • Check-ups: about 1 month after the procedure, then after 3, 6 and 12 months

Treatment effects

The result of a tummy tuck is a flat, taut abdomen, a clearer waist and a repaired muscular corset - without a skin fold or “apron”. During the procedure the caesarean-section scar and most stretch marks below the navel can also be removed. The full result is visible after 6-12 months.

The procedure achieves an aesthetic, taut and flat abdomen. The waistline becomes clearer, and the muscle separation is closed.

The effect is permanent, provided the patient maintains a stable weight and is not planning another pregnancy.

The scar is made low - below the underwear line - and over time becomes thin and light.

Possible complications and risks

Like any surgical procedure, this one also carries a certain risk. It is reduced by careful qualification before the procedure and by following the aftercare recommendations. Possible complications include:

  • Haematoma, infection, delayed healing
  • Scar hypertrophy, asymmetry, navel deformation
  • Long-lasting swelling, sensory disturbances in the lower abdomen
  • Rarely - thrombosis or fat embolism (prevented with thromboprophylaxis)

Frequently asked questions

Can a tummy tuck be combined with liposuction?

Yes - if needed, the flanks, waist or thighs can be modelled at the same time.

Does this procedure make you lose weight?

No - abdominoplasty contours the figure but is not a weight-loss method.

Does the caesarean scar remain?

No - the old scar is usually excised and replaced with a new one, made lower and more evenly.

Can I still have children after the procedure?

You can - but pregnancy may worsen the result. It is best to have the procedure after completing family plans.

Is the scar very visible?

The scar is located low, under the underwear. Over time it becomes thin and light.

How long does recovery take?

You can return to office work after 2-3 weeks. To physical activity - after 6-8 weeks.

Can the muscle separation be sutured?

Yes - if it is present, we suture the stretched linea alba during the procedure.

Does the procedure hurt?

Some discomfort is felt, but post-operative pain is effectively controlled with medication

Is the effect permanent?

Yes - provided a stable body weight is maintained.

When will I see the result?

The first effects are visible after a few weeks, but the final result after 3-6 months.

Does a tummy tuck remove stretch marks?

Yes - all stretch marks located on the excised piece of skin (usually below the navel) are removed with it. Stretch marks above the navel are lowered and tightened.

When after pregnancy can a tummy tuck be performed?

We recommend waiting a minimum of 6-12 months after delivery and finishing breastfeeding; it is best to plan the procedure after completing motherhood plans.

Tummy tuck: price and consultation

A tummy tuck costs from PLN 25,000 at Luna Clinic. The price depends on how much skin is removed, whether muscle separation is repaired and an umbilical hernia treated, and whether liposuction of the flanks is added. When the excess is limited to the lower abdomen, a mini abdominoplasty (from PLN 10,000) is often enough; after very large weight loss, a fleur-de-lis abdominoplasty.
