Ganglion removal in Wrocław
A ganglion is a cyst filled with jelly-like fluid that forms next to a joint or tendon sheath, most often on the wrist and fingers. It is removed under local or regional anaesthetic together with its base (the stalk), which reduces the risk of recurrence. At Luna Clinic in Wrocław the procedure is performed by orthopaedic surgeon Krzysztof Ciechan, MD, PhD.

What does the procedure involve?
Ganglion (mucous cyst) removal is a procedure to remove a benign cyst filled with a jelly-like fluid, appearing most often around the wrist or hand. The surgeon removes the cyst together with its “stalk”, which minimises the risk of recurrence, eliminates pain and discomfort and improves aesthetics.
The most common indications for the procedure:
Preparation for the procedure:
Orthopaedic consultation with a physical examination and ultrasound
In some cases - laboratory tests (blood count, coagulation)
Stopping anticoagulants and NSAIDs min. 5-7 days before the procedure (after consultation)
No need to fast - if the procedure is performed under local anaesthesia
Course of the procedure
The ganglion removal procedure is performed under local or conduction anaesthesia.
The surgeon makes a small skin incision over the lesion, carefully separates the cyst from the surrounding tissues and removes it together with its base (stalk).
The wound is closed with sutures and a pressure dressing.
Recovery and post-procedure recommendations:
The hand or foot may be immobilised in a dressing for a few days
Avoiding loading the operated limb for 7-10 days is recommended
Keeping the wound clean daily, a dry dressing
Removal of the sutures after about 10-14 days
Minor pain is possible - paracetamol can be used
Avoiding soaking the wound until the sutures are removed
Return to manual activity - usually after 2 weeks
Infection of the post-operative wound
Haematoma, swelling
Temporary sensory disturbances in the operated area
Joint stiffness (with too long immobilisation - mobilisation is important)
Recurrence of the ganglion (rarely - mainly with incomplete removal of the stalk)
Hypertrophic scar - very rare
Frequently asked questions
What is a ganglion?
A ganglion (mucous cyst) is a lump filled with a dense fluid connected to the joint capsule or tendon sheath - most often on the back of the wrist. It can be painful and may limit mobility.
What does surgical removal of a ganglion involve?
The surgeon excises the cyst in its entirety together with its stalk connecting it to the joint - this is the key to a low risk of recurrence. The procedure takes 20-40 minutes under local or regional anaesthesia.
Can a ganglion be treated without surgery?
Aspiration (drawing off the fluid) can be performed, but recurrences after it reach half of the cases, because the cyst and stalk remain. Surgery is the definitive treatment.
Does ganglion removal hurt?
No - the procedure is performed under anaesthesia. After the operation the area may be tender for a few days; the complaints respond well to standard painkillers.
What does recovery after ganglion removal look like?
A dressing and sparing of the hand for about 2 weeks, removal of the sutures after 10-14 days, then mobility exercises. Full return to activity usually takes 2-4 weeks.
When can I return to work after the procedure?
Office work is possible after a few days with protection of the wound, physical work after 3-4 weeks. Before that, avoid firmly leaning on and lifting with the operated hand.
Can a ganglion recur after surgery?
After complete excision with the stalk, the risk of recurrence is small (a few to a dozen or so percent) - much lower than after needle aspiration.
Does every ganglion need to be removed?
No - painless, small cysts can be observed, some disappear on their own. We recommend surgery in the case of pain, restricted movement, pressure on nerves or for aesthetic reasons.
How to prepare for the procedure?
Report blood-thinning medications and allergies; with local anaesthesia you do not need to fast. Plan your return home without driving with the operated hand.
Is the removed ganglion examined histopathologically?
Yes - we routinely send the excised lesion for histopathological examination to confirm the diagnosis and rule out other lesions.
What are the possible complications of the procedure?
Rare: infection, scar tenderness, temporary limitation of wrist mobility, recurrence of the cyst. Exercises after healing restore full function.
How much does ganglion removal cost in Wrocław?
