Otoplasty - prominent ear correction in Wrocław

Otoplasty reduces the angle at which the ears protrude from the head and gives them a natural shape. It is performed in children (usually from about the age of 6-7) and in adults. At Luna Clinic in Wrocław the operation is carried out by Dr Aleksandra Łuniewska, most often under local anaesthetic.

About the treatment

Prominent ear correction - what does the procedure involve?

Prominent ear correction (otoplasty) is a surgical procedure aimed at reducing the angle at which the auricles protrude from the skull and giving them a more anatomical shape. At Luna Clinic we perform the procedure with great care for the symmetry and natural appearance of the ears, minimising the risk of visible scars.

The cause of prominent ears is most often underdevelopment of the antihelix (a cartilage fold) or overgrowth of the ear concha. Otoplasty corrects both of these structures - permanently, with the scar completely hidden in the groove behind the ear.

Indications

Indications for the procedure

Whether the procedure is advisable for you is ultimately decided by the doctor during the consultation.

  • Protruding auricles (a congenital anatomical feature)
  • Asymmetry in the position of the ears relative to the head
  • Dissatisfaction with the shape or position of the auricles
  • Correction after a previous surgical procedure
03

Contraindications

Active skin infections in the ear area
Blood clotting disorders
Severe chronic diseases in an uncompensated phase
Unrealistic expectations regarding the aesthetic result
04
Preparation

How to prepare for the procedure?

The procedure is always preceded by a qualification consultation with a plastic surgeon - we discuss expectations, examine the area to be operated on and establish an individual treatment plan. As standard, we order a full set of tests (blood count, coagulation, electrolytes, ECG for general anaesthesia) and, if necessary, additional specialist consultations.

  • Surgical consultation
  • Stopping anticoagulant medications at least 14 days before the procedure (after consultation)
  • Avoiding alcohol and smoking for at least 14 days before the operation
  • On the day of the procedure - washing the hair and thorough ear hygiene, without using cosmetics

The prominent-ear-correction procedure step by step

1Assessment and measurementsthe surgeon measures the protrusion angle and analyses the cartilage structure to plan the extent of modelling.
2Anaesthesialocal in adults, general in children; the procedure on both ears takes about 60-90 minutes.
3Incision behind the auricleaccess from the back of the ear - the scar remains invisible.
4Forming the antihelix and correcting the conchathe cartilage is modelled with shaping sutures (the Mustardé technique) and/or incisions; an overgrown concha can be partially reduced and sutured closer to the head.
5Suturing and dressingthe wounds are sutured and the ears secured with a modelling dressing; for a few weeks an elastic band is worn at night.
06
Recovery

Recovery and post-procedure recommendations

  • Swelling and bruising usually persist for up to 2-3 weeks
  • A dressing or compression band for a minimum of 2 weeks (longer at night - up to 6 weeks, as recommended)
  • Avoiding sleeping on the side for a few weeks
  • A check-up and suture removal usually after 7-10 days
  • Protecting the ears from injury for a minimum of 3-6 months
  • Avoiding the sun and solarium for at least 6 weeks

Treatment effects

The result of prominent ear correction is ears lying close to the head at a natural angle, with a clearly formed antihelix and the auricle’s own character preserved. The result is permanent and visible immediately after the dressing is removed. For children it is often the end of teasing by peers, for adults - of a years-long complex.

The procedure enables the auricles to be brought closer to the head and the angle of their protrusion to be reduced, which improves the proportions and symmetry of the ears relative to the face. The scar from the surgical intervention is discreetly hidden behind the auricle, so it remains almost invisible. With a proper healing process and adherence to the post-procedure recommendations, the effect is lasting and aesthetically satisfying.

Possible complications and risks

Like any surgical procedure, this one also carries a certain risk. It is reduced by careful qualification before the procedure and by following the aftercare recommendations. Possible complications include:

  • Haematoma or bleeding requiring drainage
  • Infection requiring antibiotic therapy
  • Temporary or rarely permanent sensory disturbances in the face or auricle
  • Hypertrophic or discoloured scars
  • Asymmetry requiring correction
  • Longer-lasting swelling or bruising
  • An unsatisfactory aesthetic result requiring possible re-operation

Frequently asked questions

Is the procedure painful?

No - it is performed under local or general anaesthesia. After the procedure we control the pain with painkillers.

How long is the band worn?

We recommend wearing the compression band at night for a minimum of 4-6 weeks.

When can I return to work?

To office work - after a few days, depending on comfort.

Will the scars be visible?

No - they are hidden behind the ear and usually very discreet.

Is the effect permanent?

Yes - provided proper healing and protection of the ears from injury.

Can I do sports after the procedure?

Contact sports - only after 6 weeks, following consultation with the surgeon.

How long does the swelling last?

Usually up to 2-3 weeks.

Is general anaesthesia necessary?

We most often perform the procedure under local anaesthesia, but in some patients we recommend general anaesthesia.

Can the procedure be performed on children?

Yes - most often from about the age of 6-7, if the child cooperates.

Can the ears become prominent again?

There is a risk of a partial “rebound” of the auricle during healing. In some patients an additional correction may be necessary to achieve the optimal effect. Strict adherence to the post-operative recommendations and wearing the compression band as advised by the doctor are important.

At what age is it best to perform otoplasty on a child?

Optimally between the ages of 6 and 10 - the cartilage is already formed, and a correction before the school years spares the child unpleasantness from peers.

Can the ears return to their previous shape?

Recurrences are rare (a few percent) - they are prevented by a technique combining shaping sutures with cartilage preparation and by wearing the band as recommended.

Otoplasty - prominent ear correction: price and consultation

Prominent ear correction costs from PLN 6,000 at Luna Clinic. The price depends on whether both ears are corrected, how much the cartilage needs reshaping and the type of anaesthetic (younger children may need a general one). If only the shape of the ear is the issue, ear reshaping may be enough.
