01
About the treatment

Liposuction - what does the procedure involve?

Liposuction is a surgical body-contouring procedure that aspirates excess fat tissue from selected areas of the body. At Luna Clinic we perform liposuction with the greatest precision - we know it is not a way to lose weight, but an effective method of improving proportions where diet and exercise fail. The procedure allows slimmer, more harmonious shapes - including around the abdomen, hips, thighs, knees and back.

The removed fat cells do not grow back, which is why the effect of liposuction is permanent with a stable body weight. The harvested tissue can also be used for lipofilling - a transfer to areas requiring volume.

Indications

Indications for the procedure

Whether the procedure is advisable for you is ultimately decided by the doctor during the consultation.

  • Localised accumulation of fat tissue resistant to diet and physical activity
  • Fat folds around the abdomen, flanks, waist, thighs, knees, back or arms
  • Body contouring for patients after pregnancy or major weight loss
  • Figure asymmetry caused by uneven fat distribution
  • A complement to other plastic-surgery procedures (e.g. tummy tuck, thigh lift)
03

Contraindications

Active skin infections on the face or neck
Uncontrolled chronic diseases (e.g. diabetes, arterial hypertension)
Blood clotting disorders
Severe general conditions precluding general anaesthesia
Allergy to anaesthetics
Unrealistic expectations regarding the results of the procedure
04
Preparation

How to prepare for the procedure?

The procedure is always preceded by a qualification consultation with a plastic surgeon - we discuss expectations, examine the area to be operated on and establish an individual treatment plan. As standard, we order a full set of tests (blood count, coagulation, electrolytes, ECG for general anaesthesia) and, if necessary, additional specialist consultations.

  • Consultation with a plastic surgeon for qualification, discussing expectations and the treatment plan
  • Laboratory tests
  • Stopping anticoagulant medications at least 14 days before the operation (after consulting a doctor)
  • Avoiding alcohol and smoking for a minimum of 14 days before the procedure - for better healing
  • Thorough skin hygiene on the day of the procedure (no make-up, creams or lotions)

The liposuction procedure step by step

1Qualification and planthe surgeon assesses skin quality and fat distribution and marks the treatment areas on the patient’s skin.
2Anaesthesiadepending on the scope - local (smaller areas) or general; the procedure takes from 1 to 3 hours.
3Infiltration with tumescent fluidthe operated area is infiltrated with a vessel-constricting and anaesthetising solution - this minimises bleeding and bruising.
4Aspiration of the fat tissuethrough incisions of a few millimetres the surgeon inserts thin cannulas and evenly aspirates the fat, modelling the contour.
5Wound closure and compressionthe small incisions are closed with single sutures; the patient puts on compression garments worn for about 6 weeks.
06
Recovery

Recovery and post-procedure recommendations

  • Swelling and bruising are natural and diminish within 2-4 weeks
  • Sleeping with the head elevated is recommended for the first few days
  • Dressings and sutures cared for according to the doctor’s recommendations
  • Sutures are usually removed after 7-14 days
  • Avoiding intense physical exertion and bending over for a minimum of 4-6 weeks
  • No sunbathing or use of a solarium for a minimum of 6 months - SPF 50 protection is necessary
  • After full healing, scar massages and products supporting their maturation may be introduced - according to the doctor’s recommendation
  • Check-ups: about 1 month after the procedure, then after 3, 6 and 12 months
07

Treatment effects

The result of liposuction is a slimmer, proportional figure with a more defined waist and contour. The first results are visible once the swelling subsides (3-4 weeks), and the final effect - after 3-6 months, when the skin tightens over the new contour.

Possible complications and risks

Like any surgical procedure, this one also carries a certain risk. It is reduced by careful qualification before the procedure and by following the aftercare recommendations. Possible complications include:

  • Haematoma, infection, prolonged healing
  • Irregularities, asymmetries or fibrosis
  • Skin discolouration
  • Excess loose skin (especially with large-volume aspiration)
  • Rarely - thrombosis, fat embolism (in the case of improper post-procedure conduct)

Frequently asked questions

Can I lose weight thanks to liposuction?

No - liposuction is not a weight-loss method. It is a body-contouring procedure.

How much fat can be aspirated during one operation?

Liposuction for men is quoted individually, depending on the number of areas. The amount follows the surgical consultation (PLN 300).

Can the fat come back?

At the aspirated site - no. But with a large weight gain, fat can accumulate in other areas.

Will the skin tighten after liposuction?

It depends on the skin’s elasticity. In some cases combining it with a skin lift is necessary.

When can I return to work?

To office work - after 5-7 days. To physical work - after about 4 weeks.

How long do I have to wear compression garments?

A minimum of 6 weeks, worn continuously - including while you sleep. Afterwards you can switch to gentler compression.

Are there scars?

The incisions are 3-5 mm and placed in inconspicuous locations - after a few months they are almost invisible.

Can liposuction be combined with another procedure?

Yes - e.g. with a tummy tuck, thigh lift or lipofilling. The final decision belongs to the surgeon.

Does the procedure hurt?

No - it is performed under general anaesthesia. After the operation, discomfort is controlled with painkillers.

When can I exercise?

After a minimum of 6 weeks and after obtaining the doctor’s approval.

How much fat can be safely aspirated?

The safe single volume is usually up to 3-5 litres, depending on the patient’s body weight and health - larger scopes are divided into stages.

Can fat come back after liposuction?

The removed cells do not grow back, but the remaining ones can enlarge with weight gain - which is why a stable body weight is the key to a lasting effect.

Does liposuction remove cellulite and stretch marks?

No - liposuction reduces the volume of fat tissue, but does not treat cellulite or stretch marks; these problems require other procedures.

Liposuction for men: price and consultation

In the men’s section of our price list, liposuction of the chest, flanks or abdomen is quoted individually. The cost depends on the number of areas and the volume of fat. If there is enlarged glandular tissue in the chest as well as fat, gynaecomastia surgery is needed - the surgeon will assess this at the consultation (PLN 300).
