01
About the treatment

Liplift - what does the procedure involve?

A lip lift is a surgical procedure to shorten the upper lip (the distance between the nose and the red lip), thanks to which the upper lip becomes fuller, lifted and more exposed. The procedure improves the proportions of the lower face and gives the lips a younger, more feminine appearance.

We most often use the bullhorn technique - an incision hidden just under the base of the nose, in the shape of bull’s horns, completely invisible once healed. The procedure also exposes the upper teeth when smiling, which is one of the attributes of a youthful face.

Indications

Indications for the procedure

Whether the procedure is advisable for you is ultimately decided by the doctor during the consultation.

  • Too long a distance between the nose and the upper lip (the philtrum)
  • Little visible vermilion of the upper lip when smiling
  • Gender dysphoria related to a masculinising arrangement of the lower face
  • Dissatisfaction with the results of lip fillers
  • Loss of skin tension with age (also in patients after gender correction)
03

Contraindications

Active skin infections in the operated area
Uncompensated general diseases (e.g. diabetes)
Blood clotting disorders
Pregnancy and breastfeeding (requires individual qualification)
Unrealistic expectations regarding the result
04
Preparation

How to prepare for the procedure?

The procedure is always preceded by a qualification consultation with a plastic surgeon - we discuss expectations, examine the area to be operated on and establish an individual treatment plan. As standard, we order a full set of tests (blood count, coagulation, electrolytes, ECG for general anaesthesia) and, if necessary, additional specialist consultations.

  • Surgical consultation with an assessment of indications
  • Laboratory tests
  • Stopping anticoagulant medications at least 14 days before the operation (after consulting a doctor)
  • Avoiding alcohol and cigarette smoking for at least 14 days before the procedure - for better healing
  • Skin hygiene on the day of the procedure (without lotions or creams)

The liplift procedure step by step

1Philtrum measurement and shortening planthe optimal proportion is about 11-15 mm between the nose and the vermilion; the surgeon precisely marks the strip of skin to be removed (usually 3-6 mm).
2Local anaesthesiathe procedure takes about 45-60 minuteses.
3Bullhorn incision under the nosethe wavy incision line hidden in the shadow of the base of the nose keeps the scar inconspicuous.
4Removal of the skin strip and lifting of the lipthe excess skin is excised, and the lip lifted and fixed with deep sutures without tension.
5Intradermal suturingthe wound is closed with a very fine suture removed after 5-7 days.

Recovery

Recovery and post-procedure recommendations

  • Swelling and bruising are natural and diminish within 2-4 weeks
  • Sleeping with the head elevated is recommended for the first few days
  • Dressings and sutures cared for according to the doctor’s recommendations
  • Sutures are usually removed after 7-14 days
  • Avoiding intense physical exertion and bending over for a minimum of 4-6 weeks
  • No sunbathing or use of a solarium for a minimum of 6 months - SPF 50 protection is necessary
  • After full healing, scar massages and products supporting their maturation may be introduced - according to the doctor’s recommendation
  • Check-ups: about 1 month after the procedure, then after 3, 6 and 12 months

Treatment effects

The result of a lip lift is a permanently lifted, fuller upper lip with an exposed vermilion, a shortened philtrum and a subtle exposure of the teeth when smiling - a natural rejuvenation of the lower face without the volumetric effect of fillers. The result is lasting and does not require repetition.

A lip lift gives a lasting effect - a clearer lip contour, a shortened philtrum, improved facial proportions.

In the context of facial feminisation, the visual effect is natural and integrates harmoniously with the other feminine features.

The scar is usually thin, barely visible, hidden in a natural crease of the skin.

Possible complications and risks

Like any surgical procedure, this one also carries a certain risk. It is reduced by careful qualification before the procedure and by following the aftercare recommendations. Possible complications include:

  • Haematoma or bleeding requiring drainage
  • Infection requiring antibiotic therapy
  • Temporary or rarely permanent sensory disturbances in the face or auricle
  • Hypertrophic or discoloured scars
  • Asymmetry requiring correction
  • Longer-lasting swelling or bruising
  • An unsatisfactory aesthetic result requiring possible re-operation

Frequently asked questions

Is the procedure painful?

No. The procedure is performed under local anaesthesia, and any discomfort afterwards is relieved pharmacologically.

Is there a visible scar?

The scar is located just under the nose and over time becomes almost invisible. We take care of its aesthetic placement and quick healing.

Can I combine a lip lift with another feminising procedure?

Yes - we often combine a lip lift with rhinoplasty, jaw contouring or chin modelling.

When can I return to work?

Usually after 5-7 days. Swelling may persist a little longer, so we recommend planning time off after the procedure.

Is it a permanent solution?

Yes. A lip lift is a surgical procedure with a lasting effect. It does not require regular repetition like fillers.

Is a lip lift a good solution during hormone therapy?

Yes, but we recommend performing the procedure after at least 12 months of hormone therapy, when the facial features have already partly stabilised.

Will I look unnatural?

No. The goal is a harmonious and subtle effect that emphasises feminine features - without overdoing it.

Can it worsen the mobility of the lips?

No. The procedure does not affect the function of the lip muscles. After healing, facial expression remains natural.

Does a lip lift increase lip volume?

No. The procedure exposes the natural vermilion of the lip but does not increase its volume - that is its advantage in feminisation.

When can I return to physical activity?

After about 2 weeks, provided healing is correct and there are no contraindications at the check-up.

Lip lift or filler - which is better?

A filler adds volume but does not shorten a lengthened philtrum - with a long upper lip it can even “overwhelm” the mouth. A lip lift solves the cause of the problem and gives a lasting effect.

Will the scar under the nose be visible?

The bullhorn incision hides in the natural shadow of the base of the nose - after a few months the scar is imperceptible even up close.

Lip lift: price and consultation

A lip lift costs from PLN 6,000 at Luna Clinic. The price depends on the incision technique (under the nose or along the lip border) and on whether it is combined with another facial procedure. If you mainly want more volume and the philtrum is not long, lip augmentation with hyaluronic acid may be the better option.
