01
About the treatment

Facelift - what does the procedure involve?

A facelift is an advanced surgical procedure aimed at rejuvenating the lower face and neck by tightening and repositioning the deep tissues (the SMAS layer) and removing excess sagging skin. At Luna Clinic we focus on the classic SMAS lift - the gold-standard technique in plastic surgery, allowing a natural, harmonious rejuvenation without an artificial “mask” look. The procedure improves the jawline, smooths folds and eliminates jowls, restoring a fresh, younger appearance.

At Luna Clinic we perform the facelift with the SMAS technique - we work on the musculo-aponeurotic layer, not just the skin. It is the repositioning of the SMAS that is responsible for improving the oval, the jawline and the cervicomental angle, and for the durability of the effect measured in years, not months.

Indications

Indications for the procedure

Whether the procedure is advisable for you is ultimately decided by the doctor during the consultation.

  • Loss of the facial oval, sagging cheeks (jowls)
  • Deep nasolabial folds and marionette lines
  • Sagging skin of the neck and chin (“turkey neck”)
  • Age-related lengthening of the lower face
  • A desire for clear rejuvenation without an unnatural pulled effect
  • Improvement of the jawline and neck line
03

Contraindications

Active skin infections on the face or neck
Uncontrolled chronic diseases (e.g. diabetes, arterial hypertension)
Blood clotting disorders
Severe general conditions precluding general anaesthesia
Allergy to anaesthetics
Unrealistic expectations regarding the results of the procedure
04
Preparation

How to prepare for the procedure?

The procedure is always preceded by a qualification consultation with a plastic surgeon - we discuss expectations, examine the area to be operated on and establish an individual treatment plan. As standard, we order a full set of tests (blood count, coagulation, electrolytes, ECG for general anaesthesia) and, if necessary, additional specialist consultations.

  • Consultation with a plastic surgeon for qualification, discussing expectations and the treatment plan
  • Laboratory tests
  • Stopping anticoagulant medications at least 14 days before the operation (after consulting a doctor)
  • Avoiding alcohol and smoking for a minimum of 14 days before the procedure - for better healing
  • Thorough facial-skin hygiene on the day of the procedure (no make-up, creams or lotions)

The facelift procedure step by step

1Consultation and plananalysis of the face, skin quality and degree of tissue sagging; establishing the scope (full facelift, with a neck lift, with lipofilling or eyelid surgery).
2Anaesthesia generalthe operation takes 2.5-4 hours.
3Incisions in natural creasesin front of and behind the ear, in the hairline - planned so that the scars are practically invisible once healed.
4Tightening of the SMAS layerthe musculo-aponeurotic layer is lifted and fixed in a youthful position; this is the key stage of the procedure.
5Removal of excess skin and suturingthe skin is laid out without tension, its excess excised, and the wounds closed with fine sutures; a modelling dressing is applied.
06
Recovery

Recovery and post-procedure recommendations

The first 2-3 weeks are the main healing period - swelling and bruising subside gradually, and the patient usually returns to social activity after 2-3 weeks.

  • Swelling and bruising are natural and diminish within 2-4 weeks
  • Sleeping with the head elevated is recommended for the first few days
  • Dressings and sutures cared for according to the doctor’s recommendations
  • Sutures are usually removed after 7-14 days
  • Avoiding intense physical exertion and bending over for a minimum of 4-6 weeks
  • No sunbathing or use of a solarium for a minimum of 6 months - SPF 50 protection is necessary
  • After full healing, scar massages and products supporting their maturation may be introduced - according to the doctor’s recommendation
  • Check-ups: about 1 month after the procedure, then after 3, 6 and 12 months

Treatment effects

The effect of the facelift is clear rejuvenation - improvement of the facial oval, the jawline and neck, and smoothing of folds - while fully preserving natural facial expression. The face looks rested and 8-12 years younger, and the effect lasts for many years because the deep structures were corrected, not just the skin.

A facelift significantly improves the jawline and neck contour, reduces skin sagging and deepened folds, giving a younger, fresh yet natural appearance. The effect lasts an average of 8-12 years. Skin ageing will continue, but the face looks much younger than without the procedure. An individual approach allows the scope and technique to be adjusted to achieve the most harmonious result possible.

Possible complications and risks

Like any surgical procedure, this one also carries a certain risk. It is reduced by careful qualification before the procedure and by following the aftercare recommendations. Possible complications include:

  • Haematoma or bleeding requiring drainage
  • Infection requiring antibiotic therapy
  • Temporary or rarely permanent sensory disturbances in the face or auricle
  • Hypertrophic or discoloured scars
  • Asymmetry requiring correction
  • Longer-lasting swelling or bruising
  • An unsatisfactory aesthetic result requiring possible re-operation

Frequently asked questions

Does the procedure hurt?

No - it is performed under general anaesthesia. After the procedure the pain is controlled with medication.

Will the scars be visible?

The incisions are made in natural creases in front of and behind the ear - over time they become very discreet.

How long does the facelift operation take?

Depending on the scope, 2.5-4 hours; when combined with a neck lift or eyelid surgery, correspondingly longer. The procedure is performed under general anaesthesia.

How long does recovery take?

The main healing takes 2-3 weeks. We assess the full effect after a few months.

When can I return to work?

To office work usually after 2-3 weeks, depending on the course of healing.

When will I see the final result of the lift?

The largest swelling subsides within 2-3 weeks, the face settles gradually, and we assess the final effect after 3-6 months, once the scars have faded.

Is the effect permanent?

The effect lasts about 8-12 years - the skin continues to age but looks much younger than without the procedure.

Can a facelift be combined with other procedures?

Yes - it is often combined with a neck lift or eyelid surgery.

Is the procedure suitable for men?

Yes - we also perform the lift on men, preserving male anatomy and a natural effect.

How does a SMAS facelift differ from a skin-only lift?

A skin lift gives a short-lived effect and the risk of a “pulled” look. The SMAS technique moves the deep tissues responsible for facial sagging - the effect is natural and lasting.

At what age is it best to have a facelift?

Most often between the ages of 45 and 65 - when tissue sagging is pronounced. However, the condition of the tissues decides, not the birth date; we will assess it during the consultation.

How to prepare for a facelift?

A full set of tests and anaesthesiological qualification, stopping smoking for at least 4 weeks and blood-thinning medications after agreement with the doctor. You will receive a detailed list of recommendations at the consultation.
