PRP injections (platelet-rich plasma) in Wrocław

Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) is prepared from your own blood: after centrifuging, the fraction rich in platelets and growth factors is separated and injected where tissue is damaged - into a joint, a tendon or a muscle attachment, under ultrasound guidance or by palpation. At Luna Clinic in Wrocław PRP is given by orthopaedic surgeon Krzysztof Ciechan, MD, PhD.

What does the procedure involve?

Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) is a modern regenerative therapy using the patient’s concentrated blood platelets, rich in growth factors. Administered to the site of damage, they stimulate the natural healing processes of tendons, ligaments and joints. It is a safe, autologous method supporting the treatment of injuries and overuse changes.

The most common indications for the procedure:

Overuse changes of the tendons (e.g. tennis elbow, heel spur, enthesopathies)
Chronic joint pain (knee, hip, shoulder)
Early and moderately advanced degenerative joint changes
Ligament and tendon injuries
Pain of muscles and attachments
Supporting rehabilitation after surgery
Active general or local infection
Severe autoimmune diseases (during exacerbation)
Nowotwory
Blood clotting disorders
Pregnancy and breastfeeding
Taking medications that affect the blood platelets (e.g. NSAIDs, aspirin - should be stopped)
02
Preparation

Preparation for the procedure:

Orthopaedic consultation i kwalifikacja do terapii

Stopping anti-inflammatory medications (NSAIDs) 5-7 days before and after the procedure

Hydrating the body the day before the procedure (helps with blood collection)

03
Course of the procedure

Course of the procedure

The doctor takes a small amount of venous blood from the patient, which then goes into a special centrifuge.

After centrifugation, the platelet-rich plasma containing activated growth factors is separated.

The ready product is administered precisely to the diseased site - under ultrasound guidance or by palpation.

04
Recovery

Recovery and post-procedure recommendations:

On the day of the procedure - rest, no physical exertion

Possible temporary pain, swelling or a feeling of pressure at the injection site

No NSAIDs (ibuprofen, ketoprofen) for 5-7 days after the procedure

Paracetamol can be used in case of pain

Return to physical activity usually after 2-3 days

In some cases a cycle of 2-3 injections every 2-3 weeks is recommended

Orthopaedic follow-up to assess the results

Temporary pain, a feeling of pressure or swelling at the injection site

Haematoma or redness at the injection site

Infection (very rarely - thanks to the sterile technique and the patient’s own biological material)

An inflammatory reaction - a sign of regeneration, not a complication

No effect in advanced degenerative changes

Frequently asked questions

What is platelet-rich plasma (PRP)?

It is a product obtained from the patient’s own blood, concentrating blood platelets with growth factors. Administered into the damaged tissue, it stimulates its natural regeneration and relieves chronic inflammation.

In which orthopaedic conditions is PRP used?

In enthesopathies (tennis elbow, heel spur), tendinopathies, chronic pain and early degenerative joint changes, ligament injuries and as support for post-operative rehabilitation.

How does the platelet-rich plasma procedure work?

We take a small amount of blood from a vein, centrifuge it in a closed system and administer the resulting plasma to the diseased site, often under ultrasound guidance. The whole procedure takes about 30-45 minutes.

Does a PRP injection hurt?

The administration itself may be momentarily unpleasant - especially in the area of the attachments - which is why we use local anaesthesia. Tenderness after the injection lasts 1-3 days.

When do the effects of plasma therapy appear?

Regeneration is a process - the first improvement is usually felt after 2-4 weeks, and the full effect after 6-12 weeks from administration. The effects build up with each week.

How many PRP treatments are needed?

Depending on the condition: 1-3 administrations at intervals of 2-4 weeks. The plan is set by the orthopaedist after assessing the response to the first injection.

Is platelet-rich plasma safe?

Yes - the product comes from the patient’s own blood, so the risk of allergy or rejection practically does not exist. Performed under aseptic conditions, the procedure has a negligible risk of complications.

How to prepare for the PRP procedure?

Be well hydrated, avoid alcohol for 24 hours before the procedure, and stop anti-inflammatory medications (NSAIDs) for a few days after agreement with the doctor - they weaken the action of the growth factors.

How to behave after plasma administration?

For 2-3 days spare the treated area and avoid NSAIDs (paracetamol is allowed), for a week intense exertion. You return to daily activity after 2-3 days.

How does PRP differ from a steroid block?

A steroid extinguishes inflammation quickly but does not repair the tissue and cannot be repeated often. PRP works more slowly but stimulates real regeneration and can be safely repeated.

What are the contraindications to plasma therapy?

Active infections, blood diseases and thrombocytopenia, cancers, pregnancy and the use of certain medications. Qualification is carried out by the doctor during an orthopaedic consultation.

How much does a platelet-rich plasma treatment cost in Wrocław?

Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) starts at PLN 1,500 in our price list.

06
Indications

Indications - is this procedure for you?

The most common reasons patients come for the “Platelet-rich plasma” procedure:

  • Pain limiting daily activity, work or sleep.
  • Mobility limitation, instability or “catching” in the joint.
  • Insufficient improvement after conservative treatment and rehabilitation.
07

Contraindications

pregnancy and breastfeeding
active infections (especially in the operated area)
uncompensated chronic diseases: diabetes, hypertension, heart disease
blood clotting disorders or anticoagulant medications (require modification)
smoking - significantly impairs healing (a break is required)
unrealistic expectations of the result
08

Effects - when and for how long?

Effect: gradual improvement in 2-6 weeks; usually a series of 1-3 administrations. Durability: depends on the product and the condition.

after 2-3 days
Return to activity
09
Complications

Safety and possible complications

The area where the plasma is injected may be tender and swollen for a few days; infection is rare. The plasma comes from the patient’s own blood, so allergic reactions are unlikely.

We limit the risk through medical qualification, aseptic technique and precise injection. You have the right to know every aspect of the procedure - at the consultation we will discuss them honestly and without haste.
