ACL reconstruction in Wrocław

Anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) reconstruction restores knee stability after the ligament has torn. It is done arthroscopically: the surgeon takes a graft from the thigh muscles, prepares tunnels in the femur and tibia and fixes the new ligament in them. It takes about 60-90 minutes; at Luna Clinic in Wrocław the surgeon is orthopaedic specialist Krzysztof Ciechan, MD, PhD.

01

What does the procedure involve?

ACL (anterior cruciate ligament) reconstruction rebuilds the torn ligament that stabilises the knee, using a graft from the patient’s own tissues. The procedure is performed arthroscopically, minimally invasively. It restores joint stability and enables a safe return to sport and full activity.

The most common indications for the procedure:

Rupture of the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL)
Knee instability (the joint “giving way” symptom)
Lack of knee control during movement, going downstairs, twisting
Sports injuries (football, skiing, contact sports)
A planned return to sport or physical work
An instability syndrome with accompanying meniscus or cartilage damage
Uncompensated chronic diseases (e.g. diabetes, hypertension)
Active infections of the body or skin
Advanced degenerative changes in the knee joint
Incomplete skeletal maturity (in children an individual decision)
A lack of patient involvement in rehabilitation
02
Preparation

Preparation for the procedure:

Orthopedic consultation with qualification for surgery

Laboratory tests

Knee MRI with assessment of accompanying injuries

Anaesthesiological consultation

Stopping anticoagulant medications 10-14 days before the operation

No smoking or alcohol consumption for a minimum of 2 weeks before the procedure

03
Course of the procedure

Course of the procedure

ACL reconstruction is performed under spinal or general anaesthesia and takes about 60-90 minutes.

The surgeon performs the procedure arthroscopically - introducing a camera and instruments through small incisions.

Then a graft (autograft) is taken from the thigh muscles, bone tunnels are prepared in the femur and tibia, and the graft is inserted in place of the torn ligament.

The graft is fixed with special implants (e.g. bioabsorbable screws).

The procedure ends with the application of a dressing and a brace.

After the procedure, it is the surgeon who decides when the patient can go home.

04
Recovery

Recovery and post-procedure recommendations:

Using orthopedic crutches for 2-4 weeks

Wearing a knee brace (orthosis) for about 6 weeks

Gradual loading of the limb according to the recommendations of the doctor and physiotherapist

The physiotherapy programme begins in the first days after the operation and lasts 3-6 months

Return to office work: about 1-2 weeks

Return to sport: from 6 to 12 months depending on the activity

Haematoma or wound infection

Temporary or permanent sensory disturbances in the operated area

Stiffness or limited joint mobility

Pain or swelling of the knee

Damage to accompanying structures (rare)

Rupture of the graft (most often with premature loading)

Frequently asked questions

What does ACL reconstruction involve?

The torn anterior cruciate ligament is replaced with a graft - most often from the patient’s own tendons - introduced arthroscopically and fixed in bone tunnels. The operation restores knee stability.

Does a torn ACL always require surgery?

Not always - in people with a low activity level and a stable knee, conservative treatment is possible. Surgery is recommended in cases of instability, accompanying damage and a planned return to sport.

How long does ACL reconstruction surgery take?

Usually 60-90 minutes, under spinal anaesthesia. The doctor decides when you can go home, and you leave with a brace and crutches.

Where is the graft for the reconstruction taken from?

Most often from the tendons of the semitendinosus and gracilis muscles (hamstrings) or from the patellar ligament. The surgeon discusses the choice of graft individually - each option has its advantages.

What does rehabilitation after ACL reconstruction look like?

It starts from the first days: working on extension, walking with crutches for 2-3 weeks, then gradual strengthening. The staged programme lasts 6-9 months and determines the outcome of the operation.

When will I return to sport after ACL reconstruction?

To running usually after 3-4 months, to pivoting and contact sports after 8-9 months - after functional tests confirming symmetry of strength and control.

Does ACL surgery hurt?

The procedure is painless thanks to anaesthesia, and post-operative pain is well controlled by medication and cooling. The greatest complaints pass within the first week.

When can I return to work after ACL reconstruction?

Office work is possible after 2-3 weeks, physical work after 2-3 months. Driving usually after 4-6 weeks, once the knee regains control.

Can the graft rupture again?

The risk of re-rupture is a few percent and is greatest with too early a return to sport. Full rehabilitation and tests before returning significantly reduce it.

What happens if I don’t operate on a torn ACL?

An unstable knee undergoes further episodes of giving way, which damages the menisci and cartilage and accelerates degeneration of the joint. Active patients should consider reconstruction.

How to prepare for ACL surgery?

An MRI and orthopedic consultation, pre-operative tests and muscle preparation (prehabilitation) are required - a fit knee before the operation means a faster recovery afterwards.

How much does ACL reconstruction cost in Wrocław?

ACL reconstruction starts at PLN 13,500 in our price list.

Is it covered by the NFZ (Polish public health insurance)?

Luna Clinic treats patients privately. ACL reconstruction is funded by the NFZ in orthopaedic departments, after a referral and waiting list that varies by hospital.

Indications

Indications - is this procedure for you?

The most common reasons patients come for the “ACL (anterior cruciate ligament) reconstruction” procedure:

  • Pain limiting daily activity, work or sleep.
  • Limited mobility, instability or “catching” in the joint.
  • A lack of sufficient improvement after conservative treatment and rehabilitation.
07

Contraindications

pregnancy and breastfeeding
active infections (especially in the operated area)
uncompensated chronic diseases: diabetes, hypertension, heart disease
blood clotting disorders or anticoagulant medications (require adjustment)
smoking - significantly worsens healing (a break is required)
unrealistic expectations regarding the result
08

Effects - when and for how long?

Effect: a stable knee after completing rehabilitation. Durability: lasting when the recommendations are followed.

spinal
Anaesthesia
09
Complications

Safety and possible complications

As with any operation, the following are possible - though rare: haematoma, infection, sensory disturbances in the operated area, scar hypertrophy or the need for another procedure.

We minimise the risk at every stage: a sterile procedure suite, an experienced anaesthesiology team, careful qualification and post-operative monitoring. You have the right to know every aspect of the procedure - at the consultation we will discuss them honestly and without haste.
