01
About the treatment

Labiaplasty - what does the procedure involve?

Labiaplasty is the surgical correction of the labia minora (less often the labia majora), aimed at reducing their size, evening out asymmetry and improving the patient’s appearance and comfort. The procedure is most often performed for functional reasons - excess tissue can cause pain during physical activity, chafing, difficulties with hygiene, and also psychological discomfort. At Luna Clinic we approach labiaplasty with great sensitivity - we know how intimate and important this subject is for many women.

At Luna Clinic we use linear or wedge resection techniques - selected individually to the patient’s anatomy, with maximum respect for innervation and a natural appearance. We approach the subject with full discretion and sensitivity.

Indications

Indications for the procedure

Whether the procedure is advisable for you is ultimately decided by the doctor during the consultation.

  • Excessively developed or asymmetrical labia minora
  • A chafed, painful area when wearing underwear, playing sports or during intercourse
  • Hygienic discomfort - difficulty maintaining cleanliness
  • A feeling of shame or awkwardness in intimate relationships
  • Anatomical changes after childbirth, injuries or with age
03

Contraindications

Pregnancy and the postpartum period
An active intimate or general infection
Chronic diseases in an uncompensated phase (diabetes, coagulation disorders)
The patient’s unrealistic expectations regarding the result of the procedure
Allergy to local or general anaesthetics
04
Preparation

How to prepare for the procedure?

The procedure is always preceded by a qualification consultation with a plastic surgeon - we discuss expectations, examine the area to be operated on and establish an individual treatment plan. As standard, we order a full set of tests (blood count, coagulation, electrolytes, ECG for general anaesthesia) and, if necessary, additional specialist consultations.

  • The procedure is preceded by a consultation with Dr Aleksandra Łuniewska - a plastic surgery specialist, during which all medical and aesthetic aspects are discussed.

The labiaplasty procedure step by step

1Consultation and choice of techniquethe surgeon discusses the patient’s expectations and selects the method (linear or wedge resection) to the anatomy and the aim of the correction.
2Anaesthesialocal or general - depending on the scope and the patient’s preferences; the procedure takes 60-90 minutes.
3Correction of the labiathe excess tissue is precisely removed while preserving symmetry, innervation and the course of the vessels.
4Dissolvable suturingthe wounds are closed with fine absorbable sutures - they do not require removal.
5Dressing and recommendationsthe patient receives protective underwear and detailed hygiene recommendations; the doctor decides when she can go home.
06
Recovery

Recovery and post-procedure recommendations

  • For the first 3-5 days pain, swelling and burning may persist - we recommend cool compresses and painkillers
  • Dressings should be changed regularly, maintaining strict hygiene
  • For 4-6 weeks: no intercourse, avoiding the pool, sauna and intense exercise
  • Underwear should be cotton and breathable
  • The sutures are dissolvable - they do not require removal
  • Full healing takes about 6 weeks, but swelling may persist a little longer
  • Check-ups: 7 days, 1 month, 3 and 6 months after the procedure

Treatment effects

The result of labiaplasty is the reduction and symmetrisation of the labia, the resolution of chafing and discomfort, and an improvement in the aesthetics of the intimate area. Full healing occurs after 4-6 weeks; in most patients the procedure clearly improves the comfort of everyday and intimate life.

Possible complications and risks

Like any surgical procedure, this one also carries a certain risk. It is reduced by careful qualification before the procedure and by following the aftercare recommendations. Possible complications include:

  • Haematoma or bleeding requiring drainage
  • Infection requiring antibiotic therapy
  • Temporary or rarely permanent sensory disturbances in the operated area
  • Hypertrophic or discoloured scars
  • Asymmetry requiring correction
  • Longer-lasting swelling or bruising
  • An unsatisfactory aesthetic result requiring possible re-operation

Procedure variant

Labia majora augmentation (lipofilling)

A complementary option is augmentation and firming of the labia majora using your own fat tissue. Restoring the volume of the labia majora improves not only aesthetics but also the protective function - fuller labia majora better shield the more sensitive structures of the vaginal vestibule, reducing chafing and dryness.

The result of the procedure is fuller, firmer labia majora with a natural appearance and softness. Part of the administered volume (about 20-40%) is physiologically absorbed - the effect stabilises after about 3 months and is permanent; if necessary, the procedure can be topped up. Both variants - labia minora correction and labia majora lipofilling - can safely be combined in a single operation.

Frequently asked questions

Does labiaplasty hurt?

No - the procedure is performed under local or general anaesthesia. After the operation we relieve the pain effectively with medication.

Will there be scars after the procedure?

Yes, but they are very thin and hidden in natural folds - practically invisible after healing.

How long does healing take?

About 4-6 weeks. The full aesthetic effect is visible after 2-3 months, when the swelling disappears.

When can I return to intercourse?

At the earliest after 6 weeks - only after a check-up and the doctor’s consent.

Can I give birth after labiaplasty?

Yes. The procedure does not affect the possibility of natural childbirth - but it is worth planning the operation after completing childbearing.

Do the sutures have to be removed?

No. We use dissolvable sutures - they disappear on their own after a few weeks.

Does the procedure need to be repeated?

Usually not. However, if an injury, childbirth or an insufficient result occurs, a correction is possible.

When can I return to work?

To office work - after a few days. To physical work - after about 2 weeks.

Can I walk after the procedure?

Yes, but we recommend limiting movement in the first days - it is best to rest in a semi-reclining position.

Does labiaplasty improve one’s sex life?

In many cases - yes. Reducing pain, shame or discomfort has a huge impact on the patient’s intimate quality of life.

Does labiaplasty affect sensation and sexual satisfaction?

A properly performed procedure does not impair sensation - the surgical techniques avoid the innervation structures. In many patients the comfort of intercourse improves after the pain and chafing subside.

When can I return to intercourse after labiaplasty?

Usually after 4-6 weeks, following a check-up confirming full healing.

Can the procedure be combined with labia minora labiaplasty?

Yes - it is a common combination, performed during a single anaesthesia, giving a harmonious effect of the entire intimate area.

How long does the effect of labia lipofilling last?

The transplanted fat that has taken (usually 60-80%) remains permanently - it behaves like the patient’s natural tissue.
