Implant removal

Breast implant removal (explantation) is a procedure for the permanent removal of implants - for medical reasons (capsular contracture, implant rupture, discomfort) or the personal decision of a patient who no longer wants an enlarged bust. We plan the procedure so that the breast retains the best possible shape after the implant is removed.

01
About the treatment

Implant removal - what does the procedure involve?

Breast implant removal is a surgical procedure consisting in taking out previously implanted breast prostheses. It can be performed as a standalone procedure (removal of the implants only), with a simultaneous breast lift (mastopexy) or with lipofilling (a transfer of the person’s own fat to partially reconstruct volume). The aim is to restore the patient’s natural appearance and comfort after the decision to give up the implants.

Depending on the indications, we remove the implant alone or the implant together with the connective-tissue capsule (capsulectomy - partial, total or en bloc). At the same time, a breast lift or lipofilling can be performed to compensate for the lost volume.

02
Indications

Indications for the procedure

Whether the procedure is advisable for you is ultimately decided by the doctor during the consultation.

  • A wish to remove the implants for personal or aesthetic reasons
  • Implant damage (e.g. rupture, leakage)
  • Palpable thickenings, a fibrous capsule (capsular contracture)
  • Dissatisfaction with the shape / breasts with implants
  • Pain or discomfort in the breast area
  • A change in the patient’s aesthetic preferences
  • Past or planned oncological treatment
03

Contraindications

Active infections of the skin or breast tissue
Uncontrolled chronic diseases (e.g. diabetes, hypertension)
Blood clotting disorders
Pregnancy and breastfeeding (the procedure is planned after lactation ends)
Uncompensated general diseases or poor laboratory-test results
04
Preparation

How to prepare for the procedure?

The procedure is always preceded by a qualification consultation with a plastic surgeon - we discuss expectations, examine the area to be operated on and establish an individual treatment plan. As standard, we order a full set of tests (blood count, coagulation, electrolytes, ECG for general anaesthesia) and, if necessary, additional specialist consultations.

  • Surgical consultation - discussing expectations and procedure options (removal alone vs with mastopexy or lipofilling)
  • Laboratory tests
  • Stopping anticoagulant medications at least 14 days before the operation (after consulting a doctor)
  • Avoiding alcohol and smoking at least 14 days before the operation
  • On the day of the procedure - body hygiene, no creams or lotions in the breast area

The implant-removal procedure step by step

1Qualification and diagnosticsassessment of the implants (ultrasound/MRI), the capsule and tissue quality; together we determine whether the breast will require a lift or lipofilling after explantation.
2Anaesthesia generalthe procedure takes 1-2 hours depending on the scope.
3Access through the existing scarwe usually use the scar in the inframammary fold from the original operation - without new incisions.
4Removal of the implant and capsulethe implant is taken out, and the connective-tissue capsule is removed to the planned extent; the material can be sent for examination.
5Modelling and suturingif necessary, a lift or lipofilling is performed; the wounds are closed in layers and a compression bra is applied.
06
Recovery

Recovery and post-procedure recommendations

  • Swelling and bruising may persist for a few weeks
  • Wearing a modelling/compression bra for at least 4-6 weeks
  • Avoiding intense physical exertion for at least 4-6 weeks
  • No sun exposure of the scars for at least 6 months
  • A recommendation to massage and use products supporting scar maturation (according to the surgeon’s recommendation)
  • Check-ups: usually after 1, 3, 6 and 12 months
07

Treatment effects

The result of the procedure is the removal of the implants along with the cause of the discomfort and the best possible shape of the natural breast. With a simultaneous lift or lipofilling, the breast remains firm and aesthetic. The bust achieves its final shape after 3-6 months.

Possible complications and risks

Like any surgical procedure, this one also carries a certain risk - at Luna Clinic we minimise it through careful qualification, operating in operating-block conditions and the team’s experience. Possible complications include:

  • Haematoma or bleeding requiring drainage
  • Infection requiring antibiotic therapy
  • Temporary or rarely permanent sensory disturbances in the operated area
  • Hypertrophic or discoloured scars - minimised thanks to precise suturing technique
  • Asymmetry requiring correction
  • Longer-lasting swelling or bruising
  • An unsatisfactory aesthetic result requiring possible re-operation

Frequently asked questions

Does implant removal require general anaesthesia?

Yes - the procedure is performed under general anaesthesia.

Is a breast lift always needed?

Not always - it depends on the skin condition and the size of the implants. We discuss this individually at the consultation.

What is breast lipofilling?

It is a transfer of the person’s own fat to the breast - it helps partially restore volume after implant removal.

Will the scars be visible?

Old incisions are most often used. Scars after mastopexy are longer, but carefully planned and sutured

Won’t the breasts be very saggy after implant removal?

Sagging may occur - in that case we suggest mastopexy or lipofilling.

How long does recovery take?

About 4-6 weeks to return to full physical activity.

Is lipofilling safe?

Yes - it is a transfer of the person’s own tissue, which minimises the risk of rejection.

Can the implants be removed and new ones inserted in the same procedure?

Yes - this is possible if the patient wishes it and there are no contraindications.

What are the alternatives?

The implants can be left in place or replaced with smaller ones. Mastopexy alone is also possible.

Is the effect permanent?

Removal of the implants is definitive. The result of mastopexy or lipofilling depends on tissue quality and ageing.

What does the breast look like after implant removal?

It depends on the size of the implant, the skin quality and the amount of the person’s own tissue. For some patients explantation alone is enough; for others we suggest a simultaneous lift or lipofilling - we will assess this at the consultation.

Does the capsule around the implant always have to be removed?

Not always - the decision depends on its condition (contracture, calcifications) and the reason for explantation. An altered capsule is removed and sent for histopathological examination.

What does breast implant removal involve?

Implant removal is a procedure in the field of plastic surgery. At Luna Clinic, every treatment plan is created individually - we start with a thorough consultation and qualification, during which the doctor discusses expectations, assesses the starting situation and selects the scope and technique of the procedure. Thanks to this, breast implant removal is safe, predictable and tailored to the anatomy and real needs of the specific person. We focus on a natural rather than artificial effect - so that the result emphasises individual beauty and remains in harmony with the rest of the figure or facial features. You will find a full, detailed description of the method in the upper part of this page.

breast implant removal - who is it for? Indications and qualification

The best way to answer whether breast implant removal is advisable in your case is during a consultation. The doctor always decides on qualification after an examination - we take into account the state of health, expectations and the real possibilities of the given method. If the procedure is not needed or safe at the moment, we will say so directly and suggest a sensible alternative. Such an honest conversation is the basis of a good decision and satisfaction with the result - which is why we never persuade anyone into unnecessary procedures.

How does the procedure go?

The course is planned to take maximum care of your comfort and safety. We work in comfortable conditions that meet all standards, and an experienced team oversees the process. All recommendations - preparation, contraindications and post-procedure conduct - are discussed individually and also provided in writing, so that breast implant removal proceeds calmly, predictably and without surprises.

Effects and durability - breast implant removal before and after

The effects that breast implant removal provides are always assessed individually. A natural, harmonious refreshment of appearance or an improvement of proportions is the goal we strive for with every patient. “Before and after” transformations are best viewed in our results gallery - they show the real outcomes of our work. Remember that the durability and quality of the effect are also influenced by lifestyle, care and consistent adherence to post-procedure recommendations.

Recovery and post-procedure recommendations

Recovery goes most smoothly when you follow the recommendations closely. After the procedure you remain under the clinic’s care - in the first days, contact with a doctor is available, and we schedule follow-up visits until full healing and assessment of the effect. You receive clear instructions on care, activity and any supporting products in writing, so you know exactly what to expect at each stage of returning to form.

Safety, experience and trust

Safety is an absolute priority for us. Implant removal is performed by Dr Aleksandra Łuniewska - a plastic surgery specialist, with care for safety and an individual approach to the patient. Careful qualification, work in appropriate conditions and the team’s experience allow us to minimise risk and achieve repeatable, aesthetic results. In the field of plastic surgery, not only technique matters, but also aesthetic sense and trust between patient and doctor - and that is exactly what we build Luna Clinic on every day.

It matters to us that every person feels heard and well informed, which is why we present the real possibilities and limitations of the given method and choose the best solution together.

How to prepare for the procedure?

Good preparation translates directly into the course and the effect. You receive all the guidance clearly and in writing, and our team remains available should any additional questions arise.
