Implant replacement
Breast implant replacement is a procedure to replace the existing implants with new ones - due to capsular contracture, rupture, displacement, a wish to change the size or simply many years of use. It is also an opportunity to improve the shape of the breasts: correcting the implant pocket, a lift or symmetrisation.

It is also an opportunity to improve the shape of the breasts: correcting the implant pocket, a lift or symmetrisation.
Implant replacement - what does the procedure involve?
Breast implant replacement is a surgical procedure performed to remove and replace earlier implants with new ones. It can be carried out for aesthetic reasons (e.g. a change of size or shape) or medical ones (e.g. implant damage, capsular contracture, discomfort). The procedure allows the effect of breast augmentation to be refreshed, symmetry improved and the appearance of the breasts adapted to the patient’s current needs.
Modern implants do not require routine replacement “every 10 years” - the indication is specific problems or the patient’s decision to change the size. During the replacement we can change the plane of the implant (e.g. from over the muscle to under the muscle) and the type of implant to a newer generation.
Indications for the procedure
Whether the procedure is advisable for you is ultimately decided by the doctor during the consultation.
- Ageing implants (10-15 years after the original procedure)
- Implant damage (e.g. rupture, leakage)
- Thickening of the fibrous capsule (capsular contracture)
- Asymmetry or an unsatisfactory result of the original augmentation
- A change in the patient’s aesthetic preferences (a wish to enlarge, reduce or change the shape of the breasts)
- Sagging of the breasts requiring a lift and simultaneous implant replacement
Contraindications
How to prepare for the procedure?
The procedure is always preceded by a qualification consultation with a plastic surgeon - we discuss expectations, examine the area to be operated on and establish an individual treatment plan. As standard, we order a full set of tests (blood count, coagulation, electrolytes, ECG for general anaesthesia) and, if necessary, additional specialist consultations.
- Consultation with a plastic surgeon to assess the condition of the current implants and select new ones
- Laboratory tests: blood count, coagulation, electrolytes
- Breast imaging (ultrasound or MRI - if required)
- Stopping anticoagulant and anti-inflammatory medications at least 7 days before the procedure (after consulting a doctor)
- Avoiding alcohol and cigarette smoking for 2 weeks before the procedure
- On the day of the operation: body hygiene, no lotions or cosmetics
The implant-replacement procedure step by step
Recovery and post-procedure recommendations
- Wearing a compression bra for 6-8 weeks
- Limiting physical activity (in particular arm movements) for at least 4 weeks
- Contraindicated: sunbathing of the scars, sauna, solarium - for 6 months
- After 3-4 weeks (on the doctor’s recommendation), starting scar massage and using products supporting their maturation
- Check-ups after the procedure: after 7-14 days, then after 1, 3, 6 and 12 months
Treatment effects
The result of implant replacement is a refreshed, improved breast shape - with a solution to the problem that was the indication for the procedure (hardness, asymmetry, displacement). New, latest-generation implants provide a natural appearance and many years of safety.
The result is an improved or refreshed appearance of the breasts - fuller, more symmetrical, with the desired shape and size. The procedure restores a younger breast contour and increases the patient’s comfort. The results are long-lasting, and with appropriate care the effect can last many years.
Possible complications and risks
Like any surgical procedure, this one also carries a certain risk - at Luna Clinic we minimise it through careful qualification, operating in operating-block conditions and the team’s experience. Possible complications include:
- Haematoma or bleeding requiring drainage
- Infection requiring antibiotic therapy
- Temporary or rarely permanent sensory disturbances in the operated area
- Hypertrophic or discoloured scars - minimised thanks to precise suturing technique
- Asymmetry requiring correction
- Longer-lasting swelling or bruising
- An unsatisfactory aesthetic result requiring possible re-operation
Frequently asked questions
Do I have to replace the implants after a few years?
Not always. We recommend checking the condition of the implants after 10 years, but not every patient needs the procedure.
Will the new implant be a different shape?
It depends on preference - we can change both the shape and the size if the patient wishes.
Czy zabieg boli?
The procedure takes place under general anaesthesia. After the operation we provide effective pain relief.
Will there be a new scar?
No. In most cases we use the existing scars from the previous procedure.
Can I return to work right away?
To office work - after 5-7 days. To physical work - after 4-6 weeks.
Can I breastfeed after the procedure?
Implant replacement does not affect the ability to lactate, provided the nipple and gland are not damaged.
What if the implant becomes displaced?
In that case re-operation is possible - very rarely necessary with the correct technique.
Does the new implant look more natural?
Yes, the new generations of implants give a very natural effect, both visually and to the touch.
Do I have to do an ultrasound or MRI again?
We recommend control imaging before the procedure and periodically after the operation.
Can I reduce my breasts during the replacement?
Yes, the procedure can be combined with a change of volume, a lift or tissue modelling.
Can I change the size of the implants during the replacement?
Yes - this is one of the most common motivations. The implant pocket is adjusted to the new volume, larger or smaller.
Does implant replacement hurt more than the first operation?
Usually less - the implant pocket already exists and the tissues are “prepared”. Recovery is often shorter than after the original augmentation.

What does breast implant replacement involve?
Implant replacement is a procedure in the field of plastic surgery. At Luna Clinic, every treatment plan is created individually - we start with a thorough consultation and qualification, during which the doctor discusses expectations, assesses the starting situation and selects the scope and technique of the procedure. Thanks to this, breast implant replacement is safe, predictable and tailored to the anatomy and real needs of the specific person. We focus on a natural rather than artificial effect - so that the result emphasises individual beauty and remains in harmony with the rest of the figure or facial features. You will find a full, detailed description of the method in the upper part of this page.
breast implant replacement - who is it for? Indications and qualification
The best way to answer whether breast implant replacement is advisable in your case is during a consultation. The doctor always decides on qualification after an examination - we take into account the state of health, expectations and the real possibilities of the given method. If the procedure is not needed or safe at the moment, we will say so directly and suggest a sensible alternative. Such an honest conversation is the basis of a good decision and satisfaction with the result - which is why we never persuade anyone into unnecessary procedures.
How does the procedure go?
The course is planned to take maximum care of your comfort and safety. We work in comfortable conditions that meet all standards, and an experienced team oversees the process. All recommendations - preparation, contraindications and post-procedure conduct - are discussed individually and also provided in writing, so that breast implant replacement proceeds calmly, predictably and without surprises.
Effects and durability - breast implant replacement before and after
The effects that breast implant replacement provides are always assessed individually. A natural, harmonious refreshment of appearance or an improvement of proportions is the goal we strive for with every patient. “Before and after” transformations are best viewed in our results gallery - they show the real outcomes of our work. Remember that the durability and quality of the effect are also influenced by lifestyle, care and consistent adherence to post-procedure recommendations.
Recovery and post-procedure recommendations
Recovery goes most smoothly when you follow the recommendations closely. After the procedure you remain under the clinic’s care - in the first days, contact with a doctor is available, and we schedule follow-up visits until full healing and assessment of the effect. You receive clear instructions on care, activity and any supporting products in writing, so you know exactly what to expect at each stage of returning to form.
Safety, experience and trust

How to prepare for the procedure?
Good preparation translates directly into the course and the effect.
