Ear shape correction is a procedure of surgical modelling of the ear - its proportions, contour or size - in patients with congenital deformities (e.g. a folded or cup ear), post-traumatic ones or auricle asymmetry. The aim is a natural, symmetrical ear shape harmonising with the facial features.

01
About the treatment

Ear shape correction - what does the procedure involve?

Ear shape correction is a surgical procedure for patients who want to change the proportions, size or contour of the ear, e.g. in the case of congenital or post-traumatic deformities or asymmetry. The operation consists in precise modelling of the cartilage - by incising it, removing fragments or appropriately placing sutures, which permanently gives the auricle the right shape. The procedure is usually performed under local anaesthesia, takes about 1-2 hours, and the incisions are located in the natural skin folds behind the ear, so that the scars remain practically invisible. Recovery is relatively quick, and a return to work is possible after a few days, with a recommendation to wear a protective band in the first weeks.

The operation consists in precise modelling of the cartilaginous framework of the ear - by incising, weakening, partial resection or suturing of the cartilage - with the incision hidden behind the auricle. Each deformity requires an individual plan.

Indications

Indications for the procedure

Whether the procedure is advisable for you is ultimately decided by the doctor during the consultation.

  • Loss of the facial oval, sagging cheeks (jowls)
  • Deep nasolabial folds and marionette lines
  • Sagging skin of the neck and chin (“turkey neck”)
  • Age-related lengthening of the lower face
  • A desire for clear rejuvenation without an unnatural pulled effect
  • Improvement of the jawline and neck line
03

Contraindications

Active skin infections on the face or neck
Uncontrolled chronic diseases (e.g. diabetes, arterial hypertension)
Blood clotting disorders
Severe general conditions precluding general anaesthesia
Allergy to anaesthetics
Unrealistic expectations regarding the results of the procedure
04
Preparation

How to prepare for the procedure?

The procedure is always preceded by a qualification consultation with a plastic surgeon - we discuss expectations, examine the area to be operated on and establish an individual treatment plan. As standard, we order a full set of tests (blood count, coagulation, electrolytes, ECG for general anaesthesia) and, if necessary, additional specialist consultations.

  • Consultation with a plastic surgeon for qualification, discussing expectations and the treatment plan
  • Laboratory tests
  • Stopping anticoagulant medications at least 14 days before the operation (after consulting a doctor)
  • Avoiding alcohol and smoking for a minimum of 14 days before the procedure - for better healing
  • Thorough facial-skin hygiene on the day of the procedure (no make-up, creams or lotions)

The ear-shape-correction procedure step by step

1Assessment of the deformityanalysis of the shape and symmetry of both ears; planning a cartilage correction tailored to the specific defect.
2Anaesthesialocal (adults) or general (children, extensive corrections); the procedure takes 60-120 minuteses.
3Incision behind the auricleaccess from the back surface of the ear - the scar remains completely hidden.
4Cartilage modellingthe cartilage is modelled with shaping sutures, weakening incisions or resection of the excess - until the planned contour is achieved.
5Suturing and a modelling dressingthe wound is sutured and the ear secured with a dressing, then a band worn at night for a few weeks.
06
Recovery

Recovery and post-procedure recommendations

  • Swelling and bruising are natural and diminish within 2-4 weeks
  • Sleeping with the head elevated is recommended for the first few days
  • Dressings and sutures cared for according to the doctor’s recommendations
  • Sutures are usually removed after 7-14 days
  • Avoiding intense physical exertion and bending over for a minimum of 4-6 weeks
  • No sunbathing or use of a solarium for a minimum of 6 months - SPF 50 protection is necessary
  • After full healing, scar massages and products supporting their maturation may be introduced - according to the doctor’s recommendation
  • Check-ups: about 1 month after the procedure, then after 3, 6 and 12 months

Treatment effects

The result of ear shape correction is a natural-looking, symmetrical ear with correct proportions. The result is permanent - the modelled cartilage retains its new shape for good. The scar hidden behind the ear remains invisible.

A facelift significantly improves the jawline and neck contour, reduces skin sagging and deepened folds, giving a younger, fresh yet natural appearance. The effect lasts an average of 8-12 years. Skin ageing will continue, but the face looks much younger than without the procedure. An individual approach allows the scope and technique to be adjusted to achieve the most harmonious result possible.

Possible complications and risks

Like any surgical procedure, this one also carries a certain risk - at Luna Clinic we minimise it through careful qualification, operating in operating-block conditions and the team’s experience. Possible complications include:

  • Haematoma or bleeding requiring drainage
  • Infection requiring antibiotic therapy
  • Temporary or rarely permanent sensory disturbances in the face or auricle
  • Hypertrophic or discoloured scars - minimised thanks to precise suturing technique
  • Asymmetry requiring correction
  • Longer-lasting swelling or bruising
  • An unsatisfactory aesthetic result requiring possible re-operation

Frequently asked questions

Czy zabieg boli?

No - the procedure is performed under local or general anaesthesia. After the operation the discomfort is minor and subsides with standard painkillers.

Will the scars be visible?

The incisions are made behind the ear or in the natural folds of the auricle - after healing they are practically invisible.

How long does recovery take?

A dressing is worn for 7-14 days, then a band at night for a few weeks. Swelling and tenderness of the ear subside gradually.

When can I return to work?

Usually after 5-7 days; for physical work or work requiring a helmet - after 2-3 weeks.

Is the effect permanent?

Yes - the modelled cartilage retains its new shape for good.

When will I see the final result?

The new shape is visible after the dressing is removed; we assess the final effect after the swelling subsides and the cartilage sets, after 4-6 weeks.

Is the procedure suitable for men?

Yes - we perform ear shape correction on both women and men, always preserving natural proportions and the individual anatomy of the ear.

How does ear shape correction differ from prominent ear correction?

Otoplasty for prominent ears changes the angle of the ear relative to the head; ear shape correction models the ear structure itself - its contour, folds and proportions. The procedures can be combined.

From what age can the auricle be corrected?

The ear cartilage is fully formed at about the age of 6-7 - from this age a correction is possible and often performed before the start of school.

Can ear correction be combined with other procedures?

Yes - most often with otoplasty for prominent ears or earlobe correction, under a single anaesthesia.

Can I sleep on my side after the procedure?

For the first 2-3 weeks we recommend sleeping on the back in a band protecting the ears from bending; then you can gradually return to your favourite position.

How to prepare for the procedure?

A full set of tests and anaesthesiological qualification, stopping smoking for at least 4 weeks and blood-thinning medications after agreement with the doctor. You will receive a detailed list of recommendations at the consultation.

What does ear shape correction involve?

Ear shape correction is a procedure in the field of plastic surgery. At Luna Clinic, every treatment plan is created individually - we start with a thorough consultation and qualification, during which the doctor discusses expectations, assesses the starting situation and selects the scope and technique of the procedure. Thanks to this, ear shape correction is safe, predictable and tailored to the anatomy and real needs of the specific person. We focus on a natural rather than artificial effect - so that the result emphasises individual beauty and remains in harmony with the rest of the figure or facial features. You will find a full, detailed description of the method in the upper part of this page.

ear shape correction - who is it for? Indications and qualification

The best way to answer whether ear shape correction is advisable in your case is during a consultation. The doctor always decides on qualification after an examination - we take into account the state of health, expectations and the real possibilities of the given method. If the procedure is not needed or safe at the moment, we will say so directly and suggest a sensible alternative. Such an honest conversation is the basis of a good decision and satisfaction with the result - which is why we never persuade anyone into unnecessary procedures.

How does the procedure go?

The course is planned to take maximum care of your comfort and safety. We work in comfortable conditions that meet all standards, and an experienced team oversees the process. All recommendations - preparation, contraindications and post-procedure conduct - are discussed individually and also provided in writing, so that ear shape correction proceeds calmly, predictably and without surprises.

Effects and durability - ear shape correction before and after

The effects that ear shape correction provides are always assessed individually. A natural, harmonious refreshment of appearance or an improvement of proportions is the goal we strive for with every patient. “Before and after” transformations are best viewed in our results gallery - they show the real outcomes of our work. Remember that the durability and quality of the effect are also influenced by lifestyle, care and consistent adherence to post-procedure recommendations.

Recovery and post-procedure recommendations

Recovery goes most smoothly when you follow the recommendations closely. After the procedure you remain under the clinic’s care - in the first days, contact with a doctor is available, and we schedule follow-up visits until full healing and assessment of the effect. You receive clear instructions on care, activity and any supporting products in writing, so you know exactly what to expect at each stage of returning to form.

Safety, experience and trust

Safety is an absolute priority for us. Ear shape correction is performed by Dr Aleksandra Łuniewska - a plastic surgery specialist, with care for safety and an individual approach to the patient. Careful qualification, work in appropriate conditions and the team’s experience allow us to minimise risk and achieve repeatable, aesthetic results. It matters to us that every person feels heard and well informed, which is why we present the real possibilities and limitations of the given method and choose the best solution together.

How to prepare for the procedure?

Good preparation translates directly into the course and the effect. Before ear shape correction we conduct a qualification consultation, order tests if necessary and discuss the recommendations in detail - including which agents, stimulants or activities to avoid in the days preceding the procedure. You receive all the guidance clearly and in writing, and our team remains available should any additional questions arise. We always tailor the preparation plan individually, because every situation and every patient is different.
