Surgical gynecomastia treatment is the only permanent method of removing enlarged glandular breast tissue in men. The procedure combines excision of the gland with liposuction of the surrounding fat tissue, so the chest regains a flat, masculine contour.

Surgical gynecomastia treatment - what does the procedure involve?
Surgical gynecomastia treatment is a procedure we perform at Luna Clinic fully aware of how great an impact gynecomastia can have on patients’ daily comfort. Changes within the chest, such as enlargement of glandular or fat tissue, often hinder physical activity and affect self-esteem. That is why our surgical team focuses not only on removing the anatomical problem, but above all on restoring the patient’s psychological comfort.
Gynecomastia affects up to 30-40% of adult men and - although usually medically benign - can be a source of great psychological discomfort. When the gland enlargement persists for more than 1-2 years, it does not regress spontaneously or with training or diet; only surgical treatment is effective. Before the procedure we rule out hormonal and drug-related causes.
Indications for the procedure
Whether the procedure is advisable for you is ultimately decided by the doctor during the consultation.
- True or mixed gynecomastia (enlargement of glandular tissue)
- Lipomastia (excess fat tissue within the breast)
- Chest asymmetry
- Psychological discomfort related to the appearance of the torso
- No effect after conservative treatment (diet, physical activity)
Contraindications
How to prepare for the procedure?
The procedure is always preceded by a qualification consultation with a plastic surgeon - we discuss expectations, examine the area to be operated on and establish an individual treatment plan. As standard, we order a full set of tests (blood count, coagulation, electrolytes, ECG for general anaesthesia) and, if necessary, additional specialist consultations.
- Consultation with a plastic surgeon for qualification, discussing expectations and the treatment plan
- Laboratory tests
- Stopping anticoagulant medications at least 14 days before the operation (after consulting a doctor)
- Avoiding alcohol and smoking for a minimum of 14 days before the procedure - for better healing
- Thorough skin hygiene on the day of the procedure (no make-up, creams or lotions)
The gynecomastia-treatment procedure step by step
Recovery and post-procedure recommendations
- Swelling and bruising are natural and diminish within 2-4 weeks
- Sleeping with the head elevated is recommended for the first few days
- Dressings and sutures cared for according to the doctor’s recommendations
- Sutures are usually removed after 7-14 days
- Avoiding intense physical exertion and bending over for a minimum of 4-6 weeks
- No sunbathing or use of a solarium for a minimum of 6 months - SPF 50 protection is necessary
- After full healing, scar massages and products supporting their maturation may be introduced - according to the doctor’s recommendation
- Check-ups: about 1 month after the procedure, then after 3, 6 and 12 months
Treatment effects
The result of the procedure is a flat, proportional, masculine chest - visible immediately after the operation, and fully once the swelling subsides (about 3-6 months). The result is permanent: the removed gland does not grow back. The scar at the edge of the areola is practically invisible once healed.
Possible complications and risks
Like any surgical procedure, this one also carries a certain risk - at Luna Clinic we minimise it through careful qualification, operating in operating-block conditions and the team’s experience. Possible complications include:
- Haematoma or bleeding requiring drainage
- Infection requiring antibiotic therapy
- Temporary or rarely permanent sensory disturbances in the operated area
- Hypertrophic or discoloured scars - minimised thanks to precise suturing technique
- Asymmetry requiring correction
- Longer-lasting swelling or bruising
- An unsatisfactory aesthetic result requiring possible re-operation
Frequently asked questions
Is the gynecomastia procedure painful?
No. We perform the procedure under general anaesthesia, so the patient feels no pain during the operation. After the procedure a feeling of tightness and discomfort may appear, which we relieve with painkillers.
What are the most common causes of gynecomastia?
Most often these are hormonal disorders, taking certain medications (e.g. steroids), liver diseases or excess fat tissue. In many patients the cause remains unknown - so-called idiopathic gynecomastia.
Will the scars be visible after the operation?
The scars are thin and run around the areola, which allows them to be concealed as much as possible. In most patients they become barely visible over time.
When can I return to work?
To office work most often after 3-5 days. For physical work - usually after 4 weeks, following a check-up assessment.
Can I exercise after the procedure?
Yes, but only after about 6 weeks and exclusively after a follow-up consultation with the doctor. This applies especially to chest strength training.
How long will I have to wear the compression vest?
We recommend wearing it for a minimum of 4-6 weeks, 24 hours a day with breaks for hygiene. It is a key element of recovery.
Is the effect of the procedure permanent?
Yes - provided a stable body weight is maintained and there are no hormonal disorders. The effect can be long-term, and in many cases - lasting for life.
Can gynecomastia recur?
Rarely, but yes - e.g. with sudden hormonal changes, resuming medications that disturb hormonal balance, or a large weight gain.
Is a hormonal test necessary before the operation?
In most cases yes - to rule out endocrinological causes and plan optimal treatment. The choice of tests is determined by the surgeon during the consultation.
Can the gynecomastia procedure be combined with another procedure?
Yes - if the patient is in good general condition, gynecomastia can be combined e.g. with liposuction of other body areas or nipple correction. The final decision is made by the surgeon.
Can gynecomastia come back after the operation?
The removed glandular tissue does not grow back. Recurrence is possible only with a persisting hormonal cause, significant weight gain or the use of anabolic steroids.
Does the procedure leave visible scars?
The incision runs at the edge of the areola, and the liposuction marks are a few millimetres - once healed, the scars are very discreet.
How soon can I return to the gym?
Light lower-body training usually after 2-3 weeks, full chest training after 6 weeks - always after a check-up with the surgeon.

What does surgical gynecomastia treatment involve?
Surgical gynecomastia treatment is a procedure in the field of plastic surgery. At Luna Clinic, every treatment plan is created individually - we start with a thorough consultation and qualification, during which the doctor discusses expectations, assesses the starting situation and selects the scope and technique of the procedure. Thanks to this, surgical gynecomastia treatment is safe, predictable and tailored to the anatomy and real needs of the specific person. We focus on a natural rather than artificial effect - so that the result emphasises individual beauty and remains in harmony with the rest of the figure or facial features. You will find a full, detailed description of the method in the upper part of this page.
surgical gynecomastia treatment - who is it for? Indications and qualification
The best way to answer whether surgical gynecomastia treatment is advisable in your case is during a consultation. The doctor always decides on qualification after an examination - we take into account the state of health, expectations and the real possibilities of the given method. If the procedure is not needed or safe at the moment, we will say so directly and suggest a sensible alternative. Such an honest conversation is the basis of a good decision and satisfaction with the result - which is why we never persuade anyone into unnecessary procedures.
How does the procedure go?
The course is planned to take maximum care of your comfort and safety. We work in comfortable conditions that meet all standards, and an experienced team oversees the process. All recommendations - preparation, contraindications and post-procedure conduct - are discussed individually and also provided in writing, so that surgical gynecomastia treatment proceeds calmly, predictably and without surprises.
Effects and durability - surgical gynecomastia treatment before and after
The effects that surgical gynecomastia treatment provides are always assessed individually. A natural, harmonious refreshment of appearance or an improvement of proportions is the goal we strive for with every patient. “Before and after” transformations are best viewed in our results gallery - they show the real outcomes of our work. Remember that the durability and quality of the effect are also influenced by lifestyle, care and consistent adherence to post-procedure recommendations.
Recovery and post-procedure recommendations
Recovery goes most smoothly when you follow the recommendations closely. After the procedure you remain under the clinic’s care - in the first days, contact with a doctor is available, and we schedule follow-up visits until full healing and assessment of the effect. You receive clear instructions on care, activity and any supporting products in writing, so you know exactly what to expect at each stage of returning to form.
Safety, experience and trust
Safety is an absolute priority for us. Surgical gynecomastia treatment is performed by Dr Aleksandra Łuniewska - a plastic surgery specialist, with care for safety and an individual approach to the patient. Careful qualification, work in appropriate conditions and the team’s experience allow us to minimise risk and achieve repeatable, aesthetic results. In the field of plastic surgery, not only technique matters, but also aesthetic sense and trust between patient and doctor - and that is exactly what we build Luna Clinic on every day.

It matters to us that every person feels heard and well informed, which is why we present the real possibilities and limitations of the given method and choose the best solution together.
How to prepare for the procedure?
Good preparation translates directly into the course and the effect. You receive all the guidance clearly and in writing, and our team remains available should any additional questions arise. We always tailor the preparation plan individually, because every situation and every patient is different.
