Surgical scar revision

Surgical scar revision is a procedure to improve the appearance and comfort of scars - post-operative, post-traumatic, hypertrophic or contracted. At Luna Clinic we often revise scars after gender-affirming procedures (e.g. after a mastectomy), as well as after other operations where the healing process did not go optimally.

About the treatment

Surgical scar revision - na czym polega zabieg?

Scar revision is a surgical procedure of excising or resculpting an existing scar and precisely re-suturing the tissues to achieve a more aesthetic and less visible result. At Luna Clinic we understand how important the appearance of scars after transition surgery is - it is not only a matter of aesthetics but also of accepting one’s own body. That is why the procedure is performed by Aleksandra Łuniewska, MD, PhD - a plastic surgery specialist with extensive experience and an exceptional approach to transgender people, known for her empathy and ability to listen to the patient.

The revision consists of excising the abnormal scar and re-suturing it in layers without tension - if needed with a change in the course of the scar (Z/W-plasty) or supplemented with silicone therapy and massage. We revise the scar when it is mature, usually 6-12 months after the original operation.

Indications

Indications for the procedure

Whether the procedure is advisable for you is ultimately decided by the doctor during the consultation.

  • Scars after a mastectomy (e.g. uneven, hypertrophic, wide)
  • Scars after other transition procedures (e.g. after previous chest operations, reconstructions)
  • Post-traumatic or post-burn scars
  • Scars that restrict movement or cause discomfort
  • Scars that cause dysphoria or interfere with daily functioning
03

Contraindications

An active skin infection near the scar
A tendency to form keloids (requires individual qualification)
Uncompensated diabetes or serious general diseases
Allergy to anaesthetics
Unrealistic expectations regarding the result
04
Preparation

How to prepare for the procedure?

The procedure is always preceded by a qualification consultation with a plastic surgeon - we discuss expectations, examine the area to be operated on and establish an individual treatment plan. As standard, we order a full set of tests (blood count, coagulation, electrolytes, ECG for general anaesthesia) and, if necessary, additional specialist consultations.

  • Surgical consultation with a detailed discussion of expectations
  • Assessment of health status, possible laboratory tests
  • Stopping anticoagulant medications at least 7 days before the procedure (after consultation)
  • Avoiding alcohol and smoking for at least 48 hours before the operation
  • On the day of the procedure: body hygiene, without lotions or make-up in the operated area

Treatment effects

The result of surgical scar revision is a thinner, lighter and flatter scar that blends better into its surroundings - and the resolution of complaints (pulling, itching, pain). We assess the final appearance of the new scar after 6-12 months of systematic care.

The goal is a thinner, smoother and less visible scar, which translates into greater psychological comfort for the patient and easier acceptance of the body. The full effect can be assessed after 6-7 months, as the scar matures.

Possible complications and risks

Like any surgical procedure, this one also carries a certain risk - at Luna Clinic we minimise it through careful qualification, operating in operating-block conditions and the team’s experience. Possible complications include:

  • Haematoma or bleeding requiring drainage
  • Infection requiring antibiotic therapy
  • Temporary or rarely permanent sensory disturbances in the operated area
  • Hypertrophic or discoloured scars - minimised thanks to precise suturing technique
  • Asymmetry requiring correction
  • Longer-lasting swelling or bruising
  • An unsatisfactory aesthetic result requiring possible re-operation

Frequently asked questions

Does the procedure hurt?

No - it is performed under local anaesthesia.

Will the new scar be visible?

Every operation leaves a mark, but the goal is to achieve the thinnest and most delicate scar possible.

Can the procedure be repeated?

Yes, if the result is unsatisfactory or the scar tends to become hypertrophic.

When can I return to work?

To office work - even the next day, but we recommend limiting exertion.

When to start massaging the scar?

After complete healing - usually about 3-4 weeks.

Do I need to buy anything special for the scar?

Yes - the doctor selects a product or silicone patches for use after healing.

Will the chest scar be completely invisible?

No - but it should be much less visible and more aesthetic.

How long does healing take?

Initial - 2 weeks, full maturation - up to a year.

Do I need a sick note?

Usually not, but if needed we issue a sick note.

What to do if the scar heals badly?

Come in for a check-up - we will arrange additional treatment.

Can a mastectomy (top surgery) scar be improved?

Yes - revising widened or uneven sections of the scar, revising dog-ears at the ends of the incisions or improving symmetry are common and rewarding procedures, usually under local anaesthesia.

Will the scar disappear completely?

No method removes a scar without a trace - the goal of revision is a scar that is as thin, flat and light as possible, much less visible than the original.

What does surgical scar revision involve?

Surgical scar revision is a procedure in the field of plastic surgery. At Luna Clinic, every treatment plan is created individually - we start with a thorough consultation and qualification, during which the doctor discusses expectations, assesses the starting situation and selects the scope and technique of the procedure. Thanks to this, surgical scar revision is safe, predictable and tailored to the anatomy and real needs of the specific person. We focus on a natural rather than artificial effect - so that the result emphasises individual beauty and remains in harmony with the rest of the figure or facial features. You will find a full, detailed description of the method in the upper part of this page.

surgical scar revision - who is it for? Indications and qualification

The best way to answer whether surgical scar revision is advisable in your case is during a consultation. The doctor always decides on qualification after an examination - we take into account the state of health, expectations and the real possibilities of the given method. If the procedure is not needed or safe at the moment, we will say so directly and suggest a sensible alternative. Such an honest conversation is the basis of a good decision and satisfaction with the result - which is why we never persuade anyone into unnecessary procedures.

How does the procedure go?

The course is planned to take maximum care of your comfort and safety. We work in comfortable conditions that meet all standards, and an experienced team oversees the process. All recommendations - preparation, contraindications and post-procedure conduct - are discussed individually and also provided in writing, so that surgical scar revision proceeds calmly, predictably and without surprises.

Effects and durability - surgical scar revision before and after

The effects that surgical scar revision provides are always assessed individually. A natural, harmonious refreshment of appearance or an improvement of proportions is the goal we strive for with every patient. “Before and after” transformations are best viewed in our results gallery - they show the real outcomes of our work. Remember that the durability and quality of the effect are also influenced by lifestyle, care and consistent adherence to post-procedure recommendations.

Recovery and post-procedure recommendations

Recovery goes most smoothly when you follow the recommendations closely. After the procedure you remain under the clinic’s care - in the first days, contact with a doctor is available, and we schedule follow-up visits until full healing and assessment of the effect. You receive clear instructions on care, activity and any supporting products in writing, so you know exactly what to expect at each stage of returning to form.

Safety, experience and trust

Safety is an absolute priority for us. Surgical scar revision is performed by Dr Aleksandra Łuniewska - a plastic surgery specialist, with care for safety and an individual approach to the patient. Careful qualification, work in appropriate conditions and the team’s experience allow us to minimise risk and achieve repeatable, aesthetic results. In the field of plastic surgery, not only technique matters, but also aesthetic sense and trust between patient and doctor - and that is exactly what we build Luna Clinic on every day.

Why Luna Clinic?

Luna Clinic is an intimate, boutique clinic where not only the result matters, but also comfort, discretion and a sense of safety. We carry out surgical scar revision with attention to every detail - from the first conversation, through the procedure itself, to post-procedure care. Patients choose us for the experience of our specialists, the individual approach and the natural, harmonious results. It matters to us that every person feels heard and well informed, which is why we present the real possibilities and limitations of the given method and choose the best solution together.

How to prepare for the procedure?

Good preparation translates directly into the course and the effect. Before surgical scar revision we conduct a qualification consultation, order tests if necessary and discuss the recommendations in detail - including which agents, stimulants or activities to avoid in the days preceding the procedure. You receive all the guidance clearly and in writing, and our team remains available should any additional questions arise. We always tailor the preparation plan individually, because every situation and every patient is different.
