Arm lift (brachioplasty) - what does the procedure involve?
An arm lift, or brachioplasty, is a surgical procedure aimed at removing excess loose skin and fat tissue from the inner part of the arms. At Luna Clinic we most often perform this procedure in patients after major weight loss or with an age-related loss of skin elasticity. The aim of the procedure is to improve the arm contour and restore a firm, aesthetic appearance.
Depending on the degree of sagging, we use classic brachioplasty (an incision along the inner side of the arm), mini brachioplasty (a scar hidden in the armpit) or techniques combined with liposuction.
Indications for the procedure
Whether the procedure is advisable for you is ultimately decided by the doctor during the consultation.
- Sagging skin in the arm area (most often after major weight reduction or as a result of skin ageing)
- Excess fat tissue in the upper part of the arm
- Asymmetry or deformation of the arm contour
- A lack of results after exercise and non-invasive treatments
- Psychological discomfort and difficulty choosing clothing
Contraindications
How to prepare for the procedure?
The procedure is always preceded by a qualification consultation with a plastic surgeon - we discuss expectations, examine the area to be operated on and establish an individual treatment plan. As standard, we order a full set of tests (blood count, coagulation, electrolytes, ECG for general anaesthesia) and, if necessary, additional specialist consultations.
- The procedure is preceded by a consultation with Aleksandra Łuniewska, MD, PhD - a plastic surgery specialist.
- The recommended preparation includes:
- laboratory tests (blood count, coagulation, CRP)
- ECG, anaesthesiological consultation
- stopping anticoagulant and anti-inflammatory medications 10 days before the procedure (after consulting a doctor)
- no smoking or alcohol consumption for a minimum of 2 weeks
- body hygiene and no use of creams/lotions on the day of the procedure
The arm lift procedure step by step
Recovery and post-procedure recommendations
- Wearing compression sleeves for a minimum of 6 weeks
- Avoiding physical exertion and raising the arms for 3-4 weeks
- No sun exposure of the scars for at least 6 months
- After about 4 weeks: starting scar massage and using the recommended products
- Sleeping with the arms slightly elevated (on pillows) is recommended for the first few days
- A check-up after 7-14 days (suture removal), then after 1, 3, 6 and 12 months
Treatment effects
The result of an arm lift is firm, taut arms without a hanging skin fold - visible immediately and fully after the swelling subsides (3-6 months). Patients regain the freedom to wear sleeveless clothes. The scar matures and fades over the course of a year.
Possible complications and risks
Like any surgical procedure, this one also carries a certain risk - at Luna Clinic we minimise it through careful qualification, operating in operating-block conditions and the team’s experience. Possible complications include:
- Haematomas, infections, delayed healing
- Discolouration or hypertrophy of scars
- Asymmetry, contour irregularity
- Sensory disturbances of the skin in the operated area
- Rarely: the need for re-operation
Frequently asked questions
Czy zabieg boli?
The procedure is performed under general anaesthesia, and after the operation the patient receives effective pain relief.
How long do the compression sleeves have to be worn?
We recommend a minimum of 6 weeks to reduce swelling and support the modelling of the arms.
Are the scars visible?
The scars run on the inner side of the arms - with proper healing they become thin and discreet.
When can I return to work?
To office work after 7-10 days, physical work - after about 4 weeks.
Can the procedure be combined with surgery of other areas?
Yes, we often combine it e.g. with a tummy tuck or thigh lift (as part of a mommy makeover).
Is an arm lift permanent?
The effect lasts about 8-12 years - the skin continues to age but looks much younger than without the procedure.
When will I see the result?
The swelling subsides after a few weeks, the final effect - after 3-6 months.
Will the arms be very sore?
A feeling of tension and discomfort is possible, but most patients tolerate the recovery well.
Will I have sensory disturbances?
In some cases temporary sensory disturbances may occur in the area of the incision.
Does the procedure help get rid of fat?
Yes - if there is excess fat, we remove it during the procedure or through
Is liposuction alone enough instead of an arm lift?
Only with good skin elasticity and a small excess. When the skin is clearly sagging, liposuction without skin resection would worsen the effect - brachioplasty is necessary.
Where does the scar run after brachioplasty?
Along the inner surface of the arm - visible mainly when the arms are raised. With a smaller skin excess a short scar hidden in the armpit is possible.

Thanks to this, the arm lift (brachioplasty) is safe, predictable and tailored to the anatomy and real needs of the specific person. The best way to answer whether the arm lift (brachioplasty) is advisable in your case is during a consultation. If the procedure is not needed or safe at the moment, we will say so directly and suggest a sensible alternative. Such an honest conversation is the basis of a good decision and satisfaction with the result - which is why we never persuade anyone into unnecessary procedures.
