Hernia repair
Hernia repair is an operation to close a defect in the abdominal wall through which tissues or organs of the abdominal cavity protrude. We most often treat umbilical and linea-alba hernias - also simultaneously with a tummy tuck, which allows both problems to be solved during one operation.

Hernia repair - na czym polega zabieg?
Umbilical hernia repair is a surgical procedure aimed at closing a defect in the abdominal wall in the area of the navel. At Luna Clinic we most often perform it as part of an abdominoplasty - an operation correcting excess skin and tissue on the abdomen. The procedure allows not only the aesthetic appearance of the navel and abdomen to be restored but also strengthens the abdominal wall and prevents further enlargement of the hernia.
A hernia does not resolve on its own - if untreated it enlarges and threatens incarceration, which is an emergency. Elective hernia repair is a short, safe procedure that permanently eliminates the problem and prevents complications.
Indications for the procedure
Whether the procedure is advisable for you is ultimately decided by the doctor during the consultation.
- An umbilical or paraumbilical hernia with an accompanying linea-alba defect
- Loss of abdominal-wall tension after pregnancies
- A hernia within the caesarean-section scar
- Aesthetic abdominal correction as part of a full or mini abdominoplasty
- Recurrent pain or a feeling of bulging in the navel area
Contraindications
How to prepare for the procedure?
The procedure is always preceded by a qualification consultation with a plastic surgeon - we discuss expectations, examine the area to be operated on and establish an individual treatment plan. As standard, we order a full set of tests (blood count, coagulation, electrolytes, ECG for general anaesthesia) and, if necessary, additional specialist consultations.
- Surgical consultation and laboratory tests
- Hernia assessment - clinical examination and possible ultrasound of the abdominal wall
- Stopping anti-inflammatory and anticoagulant medications 7 days before the procedure (after agreement with the doctor)
- Avoiding smoking and alcohol for a minimum of 2 weeks before the procedure
- On the day of the procedure - thorough hygiene, without lotions or creams on the abdominal skin
The hernia repair procedure step by step
Recovery and post-procedure recommendations
- Wearing a compression band for a minimum of 6-8 weeks
- Avoiding physical exertion for a minimum of 6 weeks
- Lifting and tensing the abdominal muscles is contraindicated
- No smoking, drinking alcohol or exposing the scars to the sun for a minimum of 6 months
- After the wound heals, introducing scar massage and products supporting healing
- Mandatory check-ups: after 1, 3, 6 and 12 months
Treatment effects
The result of hernia repair is a permanent closure of the wall defect, resolution of the bulge and complaints, and protection against incarceration. With mesh techniques the risk of recurrence is only a few percent.
The result of the procedure is a permanent closure of the hernia and an improved appearance of the navel area and the whole abdomen. Thanks to the combination with abdominal-wall surgery, the patient gains both health and aesthetic benefits. The results are lasting, provided the recommendations are followed and a stable body weight is maintained.
Possible complications and risks
Like any surgical procedure, this one also carries a certain risk - at Luna Clinic we minimise it through careful qualification, operating in operating-block conditions and the team’s experience. Possible complications include:
- Haematoma or bleeding requiring drainage
- Infection requiring antibiotic therapy
- Temporary or rarely permanent sensory disturbances in the operated area
- Hypertrophic or discoloured scars - minimised thanks to precise suturing technique
- Asymmetry requiring correction
- Longer-lasting swelling or bruising
- An unsatisfactory aesthetic result requiring possible re-operation
Frequently asked questions
Is the procedure painful?
No, it is performed under general anaesthesia. After the procedure the pain is controlled pharmacologically.
Can the hernia come back?
The risk of recurrence is small if the patient follows the recommendations and does not overload the abdominal muscles.
Will the scar be visible?
No - the incision is made low, in the lower-abdominal fold, and the wound is closed with precise suturing.
When can I return to work?
To office work after about 10-14 days. Physical work - after about 6 weeks.
Is a mesh necessary?
Not always - it depends on the size of the hernia and the surgeon’s decision during the procedure.
Can hernia surgery be performed without a tummy tuck?
Yes, but in our clinic we most often combine these two elements to achieve the best aesthetic-functional result.
How long does the compression band have to be worn?
We recommend a minimum of 6-8 weeks.
Can liposuction be performed at the same time?
Yes - if qualification allows, it is possible to combine several body-contouring procedures.
When can I exercise the abdomen?
No earlier than after 8-10 weeks and only after consulting the doctor.
Will this procedure also improve the appearance of the navel?
Yes - hernia repair is often combined with navel reconstruction, which significantly improves the aesthetics.
Can hernia repair be combined with a tummy tuck?
Yes - it is a very common and beneficial combination: during abdominoplasty the surgeon has excellent access to the hernia orifice and treats it simultaneously.
Can the hernia recur after surgery?
The risk of recurrence with modern techniques (especially with mesh) is low. We recommend avoiding lifting for 6 weeks and maintaining a correct body weight.

What does hernia repair involve?
Hernia repair is a procedure in the field of plastic surgery. At Luna Clinic, every treatment plan is created individually - we start with a thorough consultation and qualification, during which the doctor discusses expectations, assesses the starting situation and selects the scope and technique of the procedure. Thanks to this, hernia repair is safe, predictable and tailored to the anatomy and real needs of the specific person. We focus on a natural rather than artificial effect - so that the result emphasises individual beauty and remains in harmony with the rest of the figure or facial features. You will find a full, detailed description of the method in the upper part of this page.
hernia repair - who is it for? Indications and qualification
The best way to answer whether hernia repair is advisable in your case is during a consultation. The doctor always decides on qualification after an examination - we take into account the state of health, expectations and the real possibilities of the given method. If the procedure is not needed or safe at the moment, we will say so directly and suggest a sensible alternative. Such an honest conversation is the basis of a good decision and satisfaction with the result - which is why we never persuade anyone into unnecessary procedures.
How does the procedure go?
The course is planned to take maximum care of your comfort and safety. We work in comfortable conditions that meet all standards, and an experienced team oversees the process. All recommendations - preparation, contraindications and post-procedure conduct - are discussed individually and also provided in writing, so that hernia repair proceeds calmly, predictably and without surprises.
Effects and durability - hernia repair before and after
The effects that hernia repair provides are always assessed individually. A natural, harmonious refreshment of appearance or an improvement of proportions is the goal we strive for with every patient. “Before and after” transformations are best viewed in our results gallery - they show the real outcomes of our work. Remember that the durability and quality of the effect are also influenced by lifestyle, care and consistent adherence to post-procedure recommendations.
Recovery and post-procedure recommendations
Recovery goes most smoothly when you follow the recommendations closely. After the procedure you remain under the clinic’s care - in the first days, contact with a doctor is available, and we schedule follow-up visits until full healing and assessment of the effect. You receive clear instructions on care, activity and any supporting products in writing, so you know exactly what to expect at each stage of returning to form.
Safety, experience and trust
Safety is an absolute priority for us. Hernia repair is performed by Dr Aleksandra Łuniewska - a plastic surgery specialist, with care for safety and an individual approach to the patient. Careful qualification, work in appropriate conditions and the team’s experience allow us to minimise risk and achieve repeatable, aesthetic results. In the field of plastic surgery, not only technique matters, but also aesthetic sense and trust between patient and doctor - and that is exactly what we build Luna Clinic on every day.

It matters to us that every person feels heard and well informed, which is why we present the real possibilities and limitations of the given method and choose the best solution together.
How to prepare for the procedure?
Good preparation translates directly into the course and the effect. Before hernia repair we conduct a qualification consultation, order tests if necessary and discuss the recommendations in detail - including which agents, stimulants or activities to avoid in the days preceding the procedure. You receive all the guidance clearly and in writing, and our team remains available should any additional questions arise. We always tailor the preparation plan individually, because every situation and every patient is different.
