What does the procedure involve?
Ganglion (mucous cyst) removal is a procedure to remove a benign cyst filled with a jelly-like fluid, appearing most often around the wrist or hand. The surgeon removes the cyst together with its “stalk”, which minimises the risk of recurrence, eliminates pain and discomfort and improves aesthetics.

Course of the procedure
The ganglion removal procedure is performed under local or conduction anaesthesia, on an outpatient basis.
The surgeon makes a small skin incision over the lesion, carefully separates the cyst from the surrounding tissues and removes it together with its base (stalk).
The wound is closed with sutures and a pressure dressing.
Recovery and post-procedure recommendations:
The hand or foot may be immobilised in a dressing for a few days
Avoiding loading the operated limb for 7-10 days is recommended
Keeping the wound clean daily, a dry dressing
Removal of the sutures after about 10-14 days
Minor pain is possible - paracetamol can be used

What does surgical removal of a ganglion involve?

Can a ganglion be treated without surgery?

A dressing and sparing of the hand for about 2 weeks, removal of the sutures after 10-14 days, then mobility exercises. Full return to activity usually takes 2-4 weeks.
When can I return to work after the procedure?
Office work is possible after a few days with protection of the wound, physical work after 3-4 weeks. Before that, avoid firmly leaning on and lifting with the operated hand.
Can a ganglion recur after surgery?
After complete excision with the stalk, the risk of recurrence is small (a few to a dozen or so percent) - much lower than after needle aspiration.
Does every ganglion need to be removed?
No - painless, small cysts can be observed, some disappear on their own. We recommend surgery in the case of pain, restricted movement, pressure on nerves or for aesthetic reasons.
How to prepare for the procedure?
Report blood-thinning medications and allergies; with local anaesthesia you do not need to fast. Plan your return home without driving with the operated hand.

What are the possible complications of the procedure?
