What does the procedure involve?
ACL (anterior cruciate ligament) reconstruction rebuilds the torn ligament that stabilises the knee, using a graft from the patient’s own tissues. The procedure is performed arthroscopically, minimally invasively. It restores joint stability and enables a safe return to sport and full activity.

Course of the procedure
ACL reconstruction is performed under spinal or general anaesthesia and takes about 60-90 minutes.
The surgeon performs the procedure arthroscopically - introducing a camera and instruments through small incisions.
Then a graft (autograft) is taken from the thigh muscles, bone tunnels are prepared in the femur and tibia, and the graft is inserted in place of the torn ligament.
The graft is fixed with special implants (e.g. bioabsorbable screws).
The procedure ends with the application of a dressing and a brace.

Office work is possible after 2-3 weeks, physical work after 2-3 months. Driving usually after 4-6 weeks, once the knee regains control.
Can the graft rupture again?
The risk of re-rupture is a few percent and is greatest with too early a return to sport. Full rehabilitation and tests before returning significantly reduce it.
What happens if I don’t operate on a torn ACL?
An unstable knee undergoes further episodes of giving way, which damages the menisci and cartilage and accelerates degeneration of the joint. Active patients should consider reconstruction.
How to prepare for ACL surgery?
An MRI and orthopedic consultation, pre-operative tests and muscle preparation (prehabilitation) are required - a fit knee before the operation means a faster recovery afterwards.
