Stem cells in orthopedics support the regeneration of joints and cartilage. At Luna Clinic we use them in the treatment of injuries and degenerative diseases.
What does the procedure involve?
Stem cell therapy is a modern method of regenerative medicine in which cells capable of transforming into various types of tissue support the repair of damaged joint and cartilage structures. It works especially well in degenerative disease of the knee, hip and shoulder joints. Injecting stem cells stimulates the regeneration of joint cartilage and reduces pain and inflammation. It is a modern method that improves joint function and delays the need for joint replacement.
Stem cells are used in the regeneration of damage to tendons and ligaments, such as an ACL rupture or rotator-cuff injuries. Thanks to their ability to repair tissue, the therapy accelerates the healing process and reduces the risk of complications. The procedure allows a faster return to full fitness, especially in athletes.
Stem cells are particularly effective in regenerating cartilage in cases of damage caused by injury or overload. The procedure supports tissue rebuilding and improves cushioning in the joint, reducing pain and stiffness. It is a method recommended for treating patients with early degenerative changes.
Stem cell therapy is used in the treatment of chronic joint inflammation and post-injury complaints. The cells act anti-inflammatory and support tissue regeneration, reducing pain and improving joint mobility. It is an innovative approach that can be an alternative to traditional pharmacological therapies.
The mechanism of action of stem cells in orthopedics
Stem cells are used in the treatment of orthopedic conditions because of their ability to regenerate damaged tissues such as cartilage, tendons or bones. After being injected at the site of injury, these cells transform into specialised cells appropriate for the given tissue, supporting the repair process. Moreover, they secrete growth factors that stimulate the body’s natural healing mechanisms.
The use of stem cells in various orthopedic conditions
Stem cell therapy is used in the treatment of degenerative joint disease, ligament damage, tendon inflammation and fractures that are difficult to heal. In the case of degenerative joint disease, stem cells can regenerate damaged cartilage, reduce pain and improve joint mobility. Additionally, their use is particularly promising in treating athletes, enabling a faster return to full fitness.
Safety and benefits of stem cell use
Stem cell therapy is considered safe because it often uses the patient’s own autologous cells, which eliminates the risk of rejection or allergic reactions. The procedure is minimally invasive and performed on an outpatient basis, allowing a quick return to daily activities. Moreover, thanks to its ability to regenerate tissue, the therapy can significantly reduce the need for invasive surgical procedures in the future.
Frequently asked questions
What does stem cell therapy in orthopedics involve?
A fraction rich in regenerative cells is obtained from the patient’s tissue (most often fat or bone marrow) and administered into the damaged joint or tendon. The cells support tissue repair and inhibit inflammation.
In which conditions are stem cells used?
In degenerative joint disease (knee, hip, shoulder), cartilage damage, chronic enthesopathies and injuries of tendons or ligaments - especially when classic conservative treatment is not enough.
How is the stem cell administration procedure performed?
Everything takes place during a single visit: tissue collection under local anaesthesia, preparation of the product in a closed system and administration into the joint, often under ultrasound guidance. In total it takes 1-2 hours.
When do the effects of cell therapy appear?
Gradually - the first reduction in pain usually after 4-6 weeks, and the improvement in function builds up to 3-6 months as regenerative processes progress.
How long does the effect of the therapy last?
In most patients the improvement lasts 1-3 years, depending on the degree of degeneration, age and loads. The therapy can be repeated.
Is stem cell therapy safe?
Yes - we use the patient’s own cells, so there is no risk of rejection or disease transmission. The procedure is carried out under conditions of full asepsis.
Does the procedure hurt?
We perform the collection and administration under local anaesthesia - the discomfort is minimal. For a few days after the procedure the joint and the collection site may be tender.
Will stem cells rebuild cartilage?
The therapy supports regeneration and slows the progression of changes, relieving pain and improving joint function. However, it will not fully rebuild cartilage destroyed in advanced degeneration - qualification is key.
How does cell therapy differ from platelet-rich plasma?
Plasma delivers growth factors that stimulate repair, while cell products additionally contain cells capable of supporting tissue remodelling. The orthopedist matches the method to the condition; they are also sometimes combined.
How to prepare for the procedure?
Bring documentation and current imaging tests; a few days before the procedure stop anti-inflammatory medications (NSAIDs) after consulting your doctor, and avoid alcohol. You will receive detailed recommendations at the qualification.
What is the period after stem cell administration like?
For 1-2 weeks you spare the joint and avoid NSAIDs (they can weaken the regenerative effect), then you gradually return to activity as recommended. Rehabilitation supports the effect of the therapy.
How much does stem cell therapy cost in Wrocław?
The cost depends on the method of obtaining the cells and the number of administrations. We present a full quote after an orthopedic consultation; approximate prices can be found in the Luna Clinic price list.
Contraindications
How to prepare?
You will receive all the recommendations from us in writing. The most important rules:
- a full set of tests ordered at the consultation (blood count, coagulation)
- stop aspirin, anti-inflammatory medications and blood-thinning supplements 7 days before the procedure (in consultation with your doctor)
- do not smoke or drink alcohol for a minimum of 2 weeks before and after the procedure - this will speed up healing
- on the day of the procedure: clean skin without creams or make-up, comfortable, button-up clothing
- plan to return home with a companion and 1-2 days of rest
How does the procedure work?
We collect tissue (most often fat or bone marrow), isolate the cellular fraction and administer it into the damaged joint - a biological therapy supporting cartilage regeneration.
Recovery and recommendations
In the first days swelling, bruising and a feeling of tension are natural - they gradually subside within 1-2 weeks. You will receive clear recommendations: wound and scar care, sleeping position, painkillers.
During the first days after the procedure the on-call doctor is available by phone 24 hours a day - and if needed we support healing with physiotherapy: massage, lymphatic drainage and scar kinesiotaping.
Effects - when and for how long?
Effect: improvement builds up over 2-3 months. Durability: depends on the product and the condition.
Safety and possible complications
As with any operation, the following are possible - though rare: haematoma, infection, sensory disturbances in the operated area, scar hypertrophy, asymmetry or the need for a corrective procedure.
We minimise the risk at every stage: a sterile procedure suite, an experienced anaesthesiology team, careful qualification and post-operative monitoring. You have the right to know every aspect of the procedure - at the consultation we will discuss them honestly and without haste.

What does stem cell therapy involve?
Stem cells - orthopedics is a procedure in the field of orthopedics. At Luna Clinic, every treatment plan is created individually - we start with a thorough consultation and qualification, during which the doctor discusses expectations, assesses the starting situation and selects the scope and technique of the procedure. Thanks to this, stem cell therapy is safe, predictable and tailored to the anatomy and real needs of the specific person. We focus on a natural rather than artificial effect - so that the result emphasises individual beauty and remains in harmony with the rest of the figure or facial features. You will find a full, detailed description of the method in the upper part of this page.
stem cell therapy - who is it for? Indications and qualification
The best way to answer whether stem cell therapy is advisable in your case is during a consultation. The doctor always decides on qualification after an examination - we take into account the state of health, expectations and the real possibilities of the given method. If the procedure is not needed or safe at the moment, we will say so directly and suggest a sensible alternative. Such an honest conversation is the basis of a good decision and satisfaction with the result - which is why we never persuade anyone into unnecessary procedures.
How does the procedure go?
The course is planned to take maximum care of your comfort and safety. We work in comfortable conditions that meet all standards, and an experienced team oversees the process. All recommendations - preparation, contraindications and post-procedure conduct - are discussed individually and also provided in writing, so that stem cell therapy proceeds calmly, predictably and without surprises.

Recovery goes most smoothly when you follow the recommendations closely. After the procedure you remain under the clinic’s care - in the first days, contact with a doctor is available, and we schedule follow-up visits until full healing and assessment of the effect. You receive clear instructions on care, activity and any supporting products in writing, so you know exactly what to expect at each stage of returning to form.
